Kosuke Fukudome, Breaking News, Cuts

Breaking News: According to the Chicago Sun Times, Kevin Gregg was name closer today.

According to Carrie Muskat, Right-handed pitchers Kevin Hart and Randy Wells were optioned to Triple-A Iowa. Catcher Mark Johnson, infielders Andres Blanco and Esteban German and So Taguchi were assigned to the Minor League camp.

I think if Fukudome does not live up to his contract in the first few months he will be traded. I don't think he will be sent down because of his contract and he won't show other teams of what he does in the majors if they want to trade for him. Teams that could be interested at the deadline or before the deadline. I will also say what they would give up and what the Cubs might like.

Toronto Blue Jays: If they are trying to shed money, 1 option can be Vermon Wells he is making 12.5 million next year and 21 million the next 3 years. Wells is a 1 year younger than Kosuke, hits better and has average defense. If Ii had to pick, I will pick Kosuke any day. Wells contract is so big and the Blue Jays don't get a big crowd, they might want to do a 1 for 1 and that way they save a lot of money.

White Sox: They were already to have interest in Kosuke when they both were trying to get him before the season last year. They also were to have interest this offseason and were said to offer Nick Swisher for Kosuke straight up. Hendry said no and can I blame him Kosuke had better numbers that Swisher last year. I don't see anyone that would interest me.

Kansas City Royals: Jose Guillen maybe because the contract are the same and his contract is up after this year and most likely wants to go to a contending team. The Cubs would be fine with the expiring contract of Guillen because they can go after Matt Holliday, he would be cheaper than like 3 years ago because of the economy.

Los Angeles Angels: Hot Stove Cubbies had a good post on going after Gary Matthews Jr. Matthews already made it public that he wants more playing time. The contracts are pretty much the same and he would get more playing time in Chicago. He would play more than Reed Johnson because Matthews is lefty and Pinella likes a more balance lineup.

Oakland Athletics: They might be interested if they can't sign Holliday to an extension and maybe might offer Holliday if the package is right. Kosuke will still have 2 more years on his contract. It will be easier to sign Holliday to an extension because the Cubs are in a week division and will make the playoffs. Holliday probably wants to win the world series and the time has come for the Cubs. We can then move Bradley to center, Soriano in left and Holliday in right. Then Lou Pinella picks Johnson or Gathright as the 4th outfielder.

Seattle Mariners: They were already to have interest in Kosuke and were said to offer Bedard, Johjima, or Washburn. If I had to pick from them I would of pick Bedard and just hope he stays healthy.

San Francisco Giants: They could offer Aaron Rowand, he has the same money left on contract, same stats. I will take Kosuke first because he is a lefty and has more seed than Rowand. Rowand has 1 more year on his contract than Kosuke and the Cubs probably don't want that because they are both the same stats and might want to go out and fine something else.

Of all the trades I said I will rate the ones on the best :

1) Toronto Blue Jays
2) Oakland Athletics
3) Los Angeles Angels
4) Kansas City Royals
5) Seattle Mariners
6) San Francisco Giants
7) Chicago White Sox

That is what teams that could be interested and what the Cubs might want.

Can So Taguchi take Gathright spot

According to Gordon Wittnymer and Carrie Muskat mentiones So Taguchi has outplayed Joey Gathright and Lou Pinella has noticed.

Lou Pinella said after Friday's game about So Taguchi:

"I'll tell you the guy who's had a heck of a spring is Taguchi. He gives you a very professional at-bat and has done a really nice job. I don't know if there will be room, but what a professional young man he is and the way he approaches things and the way he works. I've been very impressed."

Wittnymer said the Cubs should try any way to keep Taguchi even if it means to send dowm speedster Joey Gathright.

If I had to pick, I would pick Gathright any time before So Taguchi.

I will keep you posted.

Spring Training Notes

This is news from spring training:

Koyie Hill caught Rich Harden's outing and people think that he has the edge to be the backup catcher.

According to the Chicago Sun Times, Angel Guzman is a viable candidate once again for the Cubs' pen along with Kevin Hart, Jeff Samardzija, Chad Gaudin, Chad Fox and David Patton.

According to the Tribune, "It looks like Jeff Samardzija could lose out to Angel Guzman for the final bullpen spot, and Rule 5 pick David Patton might not make it despite a 0.93 ERA."

The Tribune explained, David Patton could make the team if Luis Vizcaino or Chad Gaudin suffers a injury or goes on the DL.

According to the Sun Times, Chad Fox, Mike Stanton and Randy Wells is a long shot to make the bullpen on opening day.

Jeff Samardzija has pitched his self out of the bullpen due to his last couple outings.

Lou Pinella said Angel Guzman has "thrust himself back in the mix" with his recent outings.

Awards in Presesason So Far, Battles Update

This is only for players that are going to make the team:

MVP: Milton Bradley
CY: Carlos Zambrano
Speedster (stolen bases): Joey Gathright
Come Alive Player: Micah Hoffpauir
LVP In Hitting: Derek Lee (he was injure and now he is starting to hit the ball)
LVP in Pitching: Chad Gaudin
Outstanding players with the bat: Jake Fox, Bobby Scales, Andres Blanco (If Ramirez gets injure you could see Fox or Scales get call up)
Outstanding players that pitch: David Patton, Waddell, Ascaino (If Guzman, Gaudin, or Vizcaino get traded or released, you could see them get called up)

Battles:

Catcher: Paul Bako vs Koyie Hill
Paul Bako is playing better than Koyie Hill as of right now. I think if Lou Pinella wants a veteran behind the plate like what Henry Blanco was, he will go with Bako but if he wants to give Hill a chance and let him show what he can do, Hill will be the catcher.
I give the edge to Koyie Hill.

Closer: Kevin Gregg vs Carlos Marmol
Kevin Gregg has not given up a run in spring training yet and has the experience at closer. Carlos Marmol is one of the best setup men in baseball and can get outs any way at possible.
I give the edge to Kevin Gregg

That is what I think of spring training and I will keep you updated.

Spring Training News, Offense Offense Offense

According to reports from this weekend, Lou Pinella is expected to cut at least 10 players on Monday or the latest Tuesday.

According to the Tribune, Lou Pinella is expected to name the closer on the coming week.

There is talk Rich Harden might be skipped the first time around. Ted Lilly is a little behind in his work than the pitching staff because of the WBC.

Luis Vizcaino should be in the bullpen to start the season because of his big contract. Chad Gaudin might be the long relief man in the bullpen.

Saturday, Larry Rothschild said that Chad Gaudin will pitch Tuesday and then decide what they are going to do with him.

I think Chad Gaudin and Angel Guzman will take the final 2 spots in the bullpen and auction them for trade bait.

The race for backup catcher is down to Paul Bako and Koyie Hill. The other catcher that is still at camp is Mark Johnson but he can't hit. Paul Bako has been hitting better lately and Koyie Hill in my opinion is the favorite to win.

Corey Koskie, Spring Training

Corey Koskie News:

According to multiple sources, Koskie will make his decision on Saturday if he will try to make his comeback with the Cubs. Koskie "went home to ponder his future" after meeting with Cubs trainers on Friday. Yesterday Koskie was replaced by Bobby Scales after leaving in the third inning when he was not feeling good.

According to the Tribune, "The Cubs have not made an official diagnosis, but Koskie's history of concussions, combined with Thursday's episode, could make his decision simple."

According to the Tribune, Esteban German is not going to make the opening day roster. That now leaves Aaron Miles or Mike Fontenot as Ramirez's backup.

Ownership, Bruce Miles, Spring Training

Breaking News: Lou Pinella named Sean Marshall the 5th starter.

According to Cubs.com the Cubs will carry 12 pitchers into the season. This includes Zambrano, Dempster, Lilly, Harden. Marshall, Cotts, Marmol, Gregg, Heilman. Other canidates Gaudin, Patton, Vizcaino, Guzman, Samardzija and wells.

Also according to Cubs.com Lou Pinella told Jeff Samardzija that he still has a chance to make the bullpen on opening day.

Ownership news:

Gordon Wittenmyer of the Chicago Sun-Times talked to Cubs chairman Crane Kenney, who anticipates payroll room to make moves around the July trading deadline. The team's revenue sources have remained strong for the most part.

It sounds like the Cubs' new ownership will be in place before the deadline. In another article, Wittenmyer quotes Kenney as saying the Tribune and the Ricketts family are "very close to the terms of their deal," which could be wrapped up in May.

Bruce Miles Notes:

Bruce Miles said a new face of the Cubs franchise. First it was Ryne Sangberg then Sammy Sosa and for the last 10 years it was Kerry Wood. Now all them do not play for the Cubs anymore, Miles said that Ryan Dempster is the "total package" and could be the next face of the Cubs franchise. He said Derek Lee is a quiet leader and did not mention Alfonso Soriano. He also said Carlos Zambrano "has seniority, but he's had his ups and downs with teammates, managers, the media and fans." The argument against Zambrano being the 'the top Cub' is justified. Big Z has had the loudest ovations when announced at the Cubs convention the last 3 years.

WBC News:

Geovany Soto should be at camp after the loss to the USA.

The USA has no first baseman after Youklis sprained his ankle and Lee was there other first baseman on the roster even after he said I'm not doing it and he is other day to day with a injury and said he won't play for USA.

Spring Training recap:

Cubs Notes, Sprrng Training

This is notes on the Cubs front:

According to the Tribune, Aaron Miles will be back in a couple games due to a soar back.

According to the Tribune, Corey Koskie is at camp but might not play for a couple games.

According to Bruce Levine, Jose Ascaino's stock is raising while Chad Gaudin's stock is falling.

Bruce Miles says Mike Fontenot has all but lock up the second base starting job.

Lou Pinella said that Sean Marshall is the favorite to win the 5th spot in the rotation. This is the quote said:
"He has done absolutely nothing to hurt his chances," Piniella said. "He's throwing the ball as well as I've seen him throw it. He came in here as the front-runner and, truthfully, he hasn't lost that status."

Hot Stove Cubbies said that the Cubs were offered Nick Swisher for Kosuke Fukudome. I am happy Jim Hendry never did that because Swisher has low average and Kosuke can hit in the 380's, more speed and a better defender.

Milton Bradley Comments

Thhis is comments Bradley said to Gil Lebreton of the Fort Worth Telegram: When he said the Rangers wouldn't committ to him.

"My agent was saying that Jon Daniels was telling him, 'There are days when he doesn’t want to play because of his health.' Well, you can get a healthy guy to go out there and play 162 games, but he won’t do what I did in 120."

Lebreton also said Bradley was right of what he said die to what he did last years in numbers.

"If I'm being paid, and I've got the commitment to me that I give to them, you make more of an effort to be out there every day. When you're on one-year deals constantly, you've got to put up as good numbers as you can. When you have days where you’re not feeling like you can contribute, you're not going to go out there, because you’re not going to want your numbers to suck. So, if you're in a situation like I am now, if they want me to go out there when I'm feeling a little banged up, I've got no problem doing that because they've made the commitment to me."

That is some news I should past.

Luis Vizcaino and Bobby Crosby.

According to a report from the Tribune, Luis Vizcaino is in the most danger of losing his spot in the bullpen. Lou Pinella told the Mainstream Media on Monday, that one of the locks could pitch them out of a spot.

Pinella's quote from the Tribune ""We're going to take the pitchers that are pitching the best here. I think it's probably going to be harder to earn a spot, and easier to lose it."

The Tribune also mentioned that the Cubs might explore a trade for Oakland A's shortstop Bobby Crosby which could include Vizcaino and a prospect. The A's probably want to dump Crosby due to he has no where on the team. Crosby already said he wants a starting job and the Cubs don't have that.

Paul Sullivan reported that it will be hard to trade Luis Vizcaino due to his contract. Vizcaino is owed 3.5 million this year with a 500.000 buyout on a 4 million club option for 2010.

If Vizcaino is traded it could open spots for Jeff Samardzija and guys like Jason Waddell could be battling for the last bullpen spot according to the Tribune.

Other news on the Cubs:

This is more notes from the story I posted yesterday. According to Susun Slusser of the San Francisco Chronicle Bobby Crosby is going to be a backup with the addition of Olando Cabrera. A source said that the Cubs are interested in IF Bobby Crosby. A scout from the Cubs was at the Athletics game yesterday watching the game. The scout said that I am going to every games as part of a coverage of all teams. A source familiar with the Cubs says that there is nothing to it. The only problem is that Bobby Crosby is making 5.25 million this year. If the Cubs do make this trade a lot of people are going to scratch there hear of why the Cubs nevered kept Mark Derosa, Derosa will be making less than that this year. I think if the Athletics can't trade him he would be released.

Paul Sullivan of the Chicago Tribune said that Aramis Ramirez hopes to finish his career as a Chicago Cub. This could be good news for Jim Hendry and now can try to move Josh Vitters to the Padres in a package for Jake Peavy. Also Vitters might not be as good as everyone will expect, look a Felix Pie. I think if Hendry offers Vitters in a deal for Peavy the talks will heat up. This won't happen until the ownership is resolve. Also people think the missing piece of the Peavy trade was Vitters, they think Hendry wasn't offering Vitters no more and stop the talks for Peavy.

I will keep you posted on spring training and other news.

Hot Stove Cubbie News and Spring Training Battle Updates

This is news from Hot Stove Cubbies:

It says the Cubs are interested in RP left-hander Joe Beimel, IF Bobby Crosby and U Ryan Raburn.

Joe Beimel would be a good addition because he is a lefty that would come cheaper now with the market being slow. Also if Marshall becomes the fifth starter Beimel is better that Cotts who is going to make the bullpen as a lefty and Ken Kadokura and Mike Stanton showed the Cubs nothing. The only bad part is he is a type B free agent and the Cubs will have to give a draft pick up for him unless they do a sign and trade.

Bobby Crosby would be good for the 25th man on the team and for depth on the roster. The Athletics are probably going to try to trade him now due because they just signed Olando Cabrera and Nomar Garciaparra. He is not that good of a player when looking at his AVG and OBP but will be good help only if he comes cheap. I think he will come cheap due to him being injury prone and they have enough infielders with the additions of Cabrera and Garciaparra.

Ryan Raburn is young who can play any positions and who can be there ideal pinch runner. He can come cheap because he has no where to start right now for any team. Raburn been on the Cubs list for a long time. He would also come cheap due to the economy being bad and people don't want to give him money as a backup.

Spring Training Battle Update:

5th starter job is between Aaron Heilman, Sean Marshall, Chad Gaudin and Jeff Samardzija.
I am giving the edge to Aaron Heilman because he threw a scoreless 2 inning in his first game while striking out 4.

Closer spot is between Carlos Marmol and Kevin Gregg.
I am giving the edge to no body due to them both throwing scoreless innings and it will come down to the last week of spring training.

2nd base position is between Aaron Miles and Mike Fontenot.
I am giving the edge to Mike Fontenot because he is playing better and Pinella wants to give Fontenot a chance.

25th man on Bench is between Jake Fox (can play third base and first base) and Micah Hoffpauir.
I am givind the edge to Hoffpauir because he is hitting lights out. The Cubs are also thinking of going with a 6th man bench which I think Fox should make it. Unless the Cubs add someone that can compete with them.

Bachup catcher is between Paul Bako and Koyie Hill.
I am giving the edge to Koyie Hill because I think he is just out playing Paul Bako.

I will keep you posted on the spring training battle and other news.

Spring Training Game 7 and Other News

Lou Pinella Notes:

Lou Pinella gave 2 different responses when ask about Jake Peavy. Pinella first said there is nothing to say. He also said I have to manage of what I have now and id something does happen, be it then.

Pinella has not name an opening day starter but is leaning toward Carlos Zambrano and Ryan Dempster.

Jime Hendry notes:

Hendry has not talk to Curt Schilling about pitching for the Cubs. He added that a guy like that will play for us.

David Kaplan asked about Jake Peavy and Hendry said I can't say anything because Peavy is on another team and not on ours.

Hendry said that Aramis Ramirez is in the best shape ever when reporting to camp.

He also said that Carlos Zambrano's game on Monday look good and pitch with really good command on his fastball.

Zambrano said Ryan Dempster should pitch on opening day because what numbers he put up a year ago.

According to Zambrano he lost 10-15 pounds this offseason.

I will keep you posted on spring training news and other news.

Milton Bradley is set to start in the Cubs lineup in Wedensday as a DH against the Indians.

Gordon Wittnymer of the Chicago Sun-Times, said it is a long shot the Cubs will pursue Curt Schilling.

I will keep you posted.

Jake Peavy News

Jake Peavy news:

According to a report from the Chicago Tribune, the Cubs had not restart Peavy trade talk since the winter meetings. Also the Tribune says Jake Peavy is still high on the Cubs list. After facing the Cubs yesterday in spring training, he look like a guy that wants to play for the Cubs. Member the Padres still have to cut budget by either trading Brian Giles and Jake Peavy. The Cubs just have to wait until the ownership is resolve first before they start the talks.

This is what peavy had to say about his views of the Cubs. This is provided by the Chicago Tribune:

"Obviously, Chicago was a team that I did have an interest in playing for, and I respect [general manager] Jim Hendry and the organization," he said. "I respect a lot of the players they have and feel like they have a good bunch, and obviously [it's] a great city. [Those] were reasons I identified the Cubs as a team I wanted to be a part of if I had to move on from San Diego."

"Other than doing that, I just let the guys making the decisions make them. I have no idea [what will happen]. I know I'm here and I have to prepare like I'm a San Diego Padre."

This is another tidbit from Paul Sullivan or the Chicago Tribune, he said chief executive officer Sandy Alderson of the San Diego Padres may be in line for the same job when the Rickett family takes over. Sandy did not want to comment. Sandy also said a little while ago that she would step down when the ownership is resolve.

Curt Schilling news:

On Curt Schillings blog, he said that he is still not sure if I'm going to come back but if either the Cubs or Rays need a starting pitcher in the second half, I will be very interested.

Paul Sullivan of the Chicago Tribune heard from a Cubs official that they weren't surprise to here about the news. Sullivan thinks that the Cubs will take a chance on Schilling at the right price.

I will keep you posted on spring training and other news.
