Ownership Update, Good News

According to Crain's Chicago Business, the Rickett family is close to finishing off the deal for the Cubs than recent reports suggest.

A lot of people thought that there was a disagreement with the broadcast contract with WGN's network station. Also that left the two sides apart 50 million of the 900 million.

Sources says both sides made big strides for competing the deal. The Rickett family has has a lot of talks with the Tribune since early January.

The financing looks to be in place with J. P. Morgan Chase & Co., Citigroup Corp. and Bank of America Corp, the are loaning 350 million to the Tom Ricketts. Crain has learned that draft commitment letters are expected to be signed by next week. The balance of the funding will come from a $100-million private placement of notes and $403 million in cash the family generated when it sold stock of TD Ameritrade in February.

I will keep you posted on the ownership.

Injury Updates

Aramis Ramirez is running on the field but is still 5-7 weeks from returning to action.

Rich Harden is going to be out for about 3 weeks.

Alfonso Soriano is dealing with knee problems and Pinella said he might have to give days off to Soriano.

Aaron Miles should only take the maximum 15 days to heal.

Ryan Freel could be out much longer than the 15 days with the hamstring problem because that is the second time injuring it this year.

Ryan Theriot is day to day with the flu. Theriot is the 3 player to have the flu in the last week (Lee and Scales also had it).

Chad Fox career could be over with the arm injury. He has been having problems with his arm the last couple year.

I will keep you posted on all these injuries.

Breaking News On Zambrano

Breaking News: Carlos Zambrano has been suspended for 6 games for bumping the home plate umpire against the Pirates yesterday, he was also fined an undisclosed amount. His agent said Zambrano will not appealed the suspension. Zambrano will start serving the suspension today. He will be ready to pitch Wednesday against the Braves.

Freel to DL, Possible Big Trade

According to Bruce Levine, Ryan Freel is going to be placed on the 15 day DL with a hamstring problem and the Cubs will call up Bobby Scales again.

According to Hot Stove Cubbies, The Cubs officials are thinking about making a trade for both Adrian Gonzalez and Jake Peavy.

3-Team Trade

Cubs get Peavy Gonzo
Padres get Wells, Stevens, Atkins, Samardzija, Hoffpauir, Fernando Cabrera, Jose Vaquedano
Red Sox get Jake Fox

Then the Cubs trade Lee to the Angels for Figgins. They need a first baseman and lee will not use his no trade cause because he likes California.

I hope that happens but as of right now that is unlikely, but I will still keep you posted.

Roster Moves

According to ESPN Chicago, the Cubs sent relief pitcher lefty Neil Cotts and infielder Bobby Scales to Triple A Iowa and called up Utility man Jake Fox, lefty reliver Jason Waddell and infielder Andres Blanco. Blanco and Waddell were added to the 40 man roster. I think the only reason Scales was sent down because they need a backup shortstop to give Theriot days off with Miles going on the DL.

The Cubs also placed infielder Aaron Miles on the 15 Day DL.

I will keep you posted.

Cubs Keep Losing

The Cubs lost there 8th straight game yesterday and fell 1 game under 500 losing to the Pittsburgh Pirates in game 1 of a 3 game set at home.

Neal Cotts again was horrible and lost the game for the Cubs giving up a 2-run homer to Nate Mclouth. Pinella said this after the game "Neal, we've given him all of the opportunities in the world. It's about time...". He never finish it but most people think Neal Cotts will be traded or DFA within a week, I say Cotts is DFA when Harden returns off the DL, so the Cube could put Marshall in the bullpen as the only lefty and put Wells in the rotation.

Gordon Wittnymer of the Sun-Times is the one that reported the Cubs are interested Kouzmanoff and was talking about trading for Uggla and Cantu. He said if the price is reasonable Hendry will pull off a trade in about 2 weeks.

I will keep you posted.

More Players the Cubs are Interested in...

According to the Chicago Sun-Times, the Cubs might be interested in 3B Kevin Kouzmanoff. The Sun-Times also says the Cubs might just be willing to use Miles, Scales or Fontenot at third until Ramirez comes back from injury.

According to Hot Stove Cubbies, the Cubs are also interested in infielders Jorge Cantu and Dan Uggla. These 2 players will cost more than Kevin but are way better. If I had to chose from out of these 3 players, I will chose Cantu because he can hit better and is younger than Kevin and Uggla. Cantu can also play third, first and second and probably can play short if needed.

Stats for those 3 players, so far this year:

Kevin Kouzmanoff in 28 years old and has a 236 batting average with 4 home runs, 16 rbis, 7 walks and struck out 37 times.

Jorge Cantu is 27 years old and has a 276 batting average with 8 home runs, 35 rbis, 11 walks and 23 strikeouts.

Dan Uggla is 29 years old and has a 205 batting average with 8 home runs, 30 rbis, 26 walks and struck out 38 times.

Trade proposal for Jorge Cantu:
Cubs get Jorge Cantu
Marlins get Mike Fontenot, Jake Fox and a minor league pitcher.

I will keep you posted as the rumors keep on coming.

Quick Hits, Jake Peavy

According to Buster Olney, the Cubs still have interest in Peavy.

Paul Sullivan says the Cubs could pursue Peavy once the ownership transition progresses before the last part of July.

Also Peavy had to say this "I praises the Cubs fans and the organization".

According to Hot Stove Cubbies, the Cubs are scouting infielders Mark Derosa, Chone Figgins, Christian Guzman and Felipe Lopez.

Stats on all 4 infielders this year so far:

Mark Derosa is batting .260 with 7 home runs, 30 rbis, 15 walks and struck out 38 times.

Chone Figgins is batting .288 with 0 home runs, 11 rbis, 22 walks and struck out 26 times.

Christian Guzman is batting .376 with 2 home runs, 11 rbis, 2 walks and struck out 18times.

Felipe Lopez is batting .323 with 4 home runs, 10 rbis, 15 walks, and struck out 28 times.

If I had to chose for which player I would go after, it will go in this order:
Christian Guzman
Felipe Lopez
Chone Figgins
Mark Derosa (I say he is last because the Cubs have to get on base and they need speed).

I will keep you posted as the rumors are starting to rool again.

Saturday, May 23, 2009

If I was Jim Hendry, What I would do...

I will trade for Peavy because Marshall needs to go to the bullpen and the health of the rotation is unclear, as if they can stay healthy:
Cubs get Jake Peavy (they need to get his contract out of their hand)
Padres get Jeff Stevens Randy Wells Welmington Castilla Kevin Hart.

Trade Mike Fontenot to the Mets:
Mets get Mike Fontenot
Cubs get Manuel Mayorson (minor league shortstop, who can play second), Jay Buente (Minor league pitcher)

Trade Aaron Heilman to the Yankees:
Cubs get Mark Melancon J.B. Cox (minor league pitchers)
Yankees get Aaron Heilman (they need relief pitching)

Trade Neal Cotts to the Indians:
Cubs get a PTBNL
Indians get Neal Cotts

Trade Jake Fox to the Red Sox
Cubs get Clay Bucholtz
Red Sox get Jake Fox Aaron Shafer

DFA David Patton and bring him back to the Rockies.

Starting Rotation:
Big Z
Jake Peavy
Ted Lilly
Ryan Dempster
Rich Harden

Bullpen
Closer Kevin Gregg (we know Pinella is not going to take him out)
Set up Carlos Marmol
7th inning Angel Guzman
Long relief for lefty Sean Marshall
Long relief for righties Jose Ascaino
Righty Clay Bucholtz (got him from Red sox)
Righty Jeff Samardzija (call him up from Iowa)

Starting Lineup with positions when Ramirez gets returns:
Soriano 2B (how bad can he play second, he is not good in left either)
Fukudome CF
Hoffpauir LF
Ramirez 3B
Lee 1B
Bradley RF
Soto C
Theriot SS
Pitcher

Bench:
Bobby Scales (backup to 3B, 2B)
Koyie Hill (backup to C)
Ryan Freel (backup to 3B, OF)
Reed Johnson (backup to OF)
Aaron Miles (backup to SS, 2B) need him because he can backup short.

I know all that won't happen but I think that will make the Cubs a better team.

Breaking News, Writers Talk About Peavy, Lou Pinella,

Breaking News: According to the Chicago Tribune, pitcher Rich Harden was placed on the 15 day DL today with a mid-back sprain. Randy Wells will get the spot start tomorrow. Now the Cubs won't have to send anyone down before tonight's game by activating Carlos Zambrano.

Lou Pinella is thinking about moving Soriano to second, Hoffpauir to left and bench Fontenot.

First let me start out by Jake Peavy, when related to Cubs:

Gordon Wittenmyer of the Chicago Sun-Times reports that Cubs GM Jim Hendry didn't comment when asked about re-starting talks to acquire the righty. Ryan Theriot sounds excited about pursuing Peavy.

Jon Heyman believes the Cubs and Brewers have the best shot at acquiring Jake Peavy, because of the pitcher's preference for the National League and his desire to play in "middle America." Heyman believes Peavy would accept a deal to either team, but there are never guarantees with a no-trade clause.

SI.com's Tom Verducci heard one GM argue that the Padres should trade Jake Peavy and Adrian Gonzalez to re-stock the farm system.

Gammons says it made sense for Kenny Williams to try to deal for Jake Peavy because the AL Central is winnable and Gordon Beckham wasn't part of the deal.

According to Sean McAdam of the Boston Herald the Red Sox are reluctant to go after Jake Peavy because he's owed lots of money and they question his durability and how well he'd transition into the AL East.

MLB.com's Todd Zolecki wonders if it would be smart for the Phillies to acquire Peavy. Phillies GM Ruben Amaro Jr. declined to comment on the chances of making such a deal happen.

Yahoo's Jeff Passan writes that Peavy made the right call, since the White Sox are no sure thing.

I will keep you posted on everything Cubs and that is something I thought I will pass by.

White Sox, Padres Talking Jake Peavy Trade, Breaking News

Breaking News-Update 5:45: According to some reports, Jake Peavy turn down the White Sox offer and is still a San Diego Padre.

Update 9:45: Jon Heyman says the White Sox and Padres have agreed to a Peavy trade, and await Peavy's approval. MLB.com's Corey Brock agrees. Ken Williams, always operating under the radar. Now we get to see just how much Peavy hates the AL.

Peavy is owed an additional $8.35MM this year, $15MM in '10, $16MM in '11, $17MM in '12, and a $4MM buyout for '13. Total: $60.35MM guaranteed through 2012. It is surprising to see the White Sox willing to take on such a commitment to a pitcher.

Via Gonzales on Twitter: "Waiting for approval from Peavy on SD trade, according to source."

Well that stinks, I still think Jake Peavy is making a mistake and his stats will still decline. The ownership also screwerd us, if the Cubs had a owners, Peavy will be a Cub instead of a White Sox.

According to Tom Krasovic of the San Diego Union-Tribune, the Padres are in discussions to send Jake Peavy to the White Sox.

"According to Padres personnel, Peavy met with Padres manager Bud Black late Wednesday night to discuss a trade overture from the Sox:.

It is apparently a four-player offer. Jake Peavy will have to accept a trade to go to a team and he said, it is something to think about. Also Krasovic says Peavy "may have reservations about pitching for Ozzie Guillen."

Corey Brock of MLB.com ask Peavy about the rumor and he said "I only know what you guys know, Peavy was talking about the media.

Mark Gonzales of the Chicago Tribune, says scouts from the Padres were at the White Sox games last weekend in Toronto.

SI's Jon Heyman still believes Jake Peavy prefers to stay in the NL. Heyman also mentions he still likes the Cubs or Brewers as teams he will be traded to.

It is believed to be the Padres will ask for 1 of their top pitching prospects ans 1 could be Aaron Poreda, other players that might be included are pitchers Gavin Floyd or John Danks, and a centerfield or second baseman (they have a lot of those 2 positions).

If I was Jake Peavy, I will not go to the Chicago White Sox because they have no offense, will have no run support and I don't think they will make the playoffs. Its like being a Padre, no run support and no playoffs.

I still think the Padres should wait until the ownership for the Cubs is settle because I think they can get a better package that includes top prospect 3B Josh Vitters who is lighting up Single A ball right now, Jeff Stevens who is pitching really good in Triple A with a era in the 2's, Randy Wells or Sean Marshall who both can pitch in the rotation and out of the bullpen and a outfielder Brad Snyder, Jason Duboise. I don't think Jake Fox is a good fit for them because they have 2 third basemans and want someone who can field. I still think Jake Fox will be trade to a AL club who need a bench player or a DH, some time in the future.

I really hope this does not happens, but if it does, Jim Hendry will have to look a different direction.

What I think the Cubs Should Do......

I think the Cubs need to see what they can get for Aaron Miles and Mike Fontenot in a trade. They have Bobby Scales who is producing more than Mike Fontenot and Aaron Miles. I say the Cubs look at 31 year old IF Christian Guzman, who is batting 373 right now.

The Cubs also need to see what the can get for Triple A standout Jake Fox. Teams that might be interested- Boston Red Sox, New York Mets, Chicago White Sox, Detroit Tigers and any AL Team that needs a bench player or a DH.

I also think the Cubs need to see what they can get for P Randy Wells, when he still pitches good and allows no runs. If the Cubs want back Mark Derosa, that is a player they will have to give up. In my opinion I will not do that, Derosa is only batting 240.

The Cubs also have to see if they can get any players for pitchers Aaron Heilman, Neal Cotts or Kevin Gregg. I think the Cubs can get players for them because a lot of clubs are desperate of pitching.

If that stuff happens and get good players in return, the Cubs will turn there season around.

Quick Hits

Randy Wells will be in the bullpen through the weekend because Sean Marshall is pitching Thursday at St. Louis. It is still not clear who will go in the bullpen, Wells or Marshall with a open start May 26th vs Pittsburgh.

The Cub that is struggling the most is Mike Fontenot, in his last 9 games Fontenot is 1 for 29.

The Cubs that is the hottest is Kosuke Fukudome, in his last 7 games Fukudome is 12for 27.

I will keep you posted.

Update on Ownership

Tom Ricketts is close to lining up three banks to arrange the $450 million financing necessary to complete his acquisition of the team which would help him in the long run to balance the Cubs.

JPMorgan Chase, Citigroup and Bank of America are ready to committ and will do so by the end of the week. That will help Tom Rickett to submit the 900 million to the court. The court will then take 30-45 days to process the offer, then the closing can come by July.

MLB can wait untill the next owners meeting to tell the news in August to tell the news or make up a date to tell the news.

A source said, "The deal comes at a steep cost for Ricketts, a scion of the Ameritrade fortune who is putting up $450 million of equity to buy the team, Wrigley Field and the club’s 25 percent interest in Comcast SportsNet Chicago. Sources said the banking fees are substantial, and the banks are still negotiating a minimum for what the interest rate would be."

Ricketts has been trying to sell preferred notes in the team to raise another $50 million.

So it sounds like the ownership will get done by early July, enough time for Jim Hendry to make a trade to help the Cubs win.

I will keep you posted on the ownership when it comes around.

Zambrano's Rehab Start

Carlos Zambrano pitch for the Daytona Cubs today against the Blue Jays minor league team, Dunedin Blue Jays .

Zambrano pitch three and two-thirds innings and gave up 5 hits, 4 earn runs, 3 walks and 1 strikeout with a fastball that top out at 94 mph. Zambrano threw 67 pitches and 42 for strikes.

The coaching staff said that Zambrano was having a hard time to fine his release point.

Zambrano will have another bullpen session next week before he takes the mound Friday, May 22nd at San Diego Padres at 9:05pm.

The good thing that came out of Zambrano's rehab start was he was feeling no pain in his leg when landing and his velocity was good. The bad was, Zambrano only pitching three and two thirds and giving up 5 hits and 4 earn runs, Zambrano also only struck out 1 batter to minor leaguers.

Lets just hope his outing stays in the minors and hope he pitches like he did when he threw the no hitter last year against the Astros.

Saturday, May 16, 2009

Trade Possibilities

The Cubs almost lost today's game because Kevin Gregg gave up 4 runs in the 9th to tie the game up.
Closers that Jim Hendry may look at, the trade deadline:
Huston Street of the Colorado Rockies.
Jose Valverde of the Houston Astros, Valverde in currently on the 15 day DL.
Joe Nathan of the Minnesota Twins.
George Sherrill of the Baltimore Orioles.
Bobby Jenks of the Chicago White Sox.
Brian Wilson of the San Francisco Giants.
Those are some notable players that might be availabe at the trade deadline.

According to New York Reports, the Mets are looking for a first baseman to replace Carlos Delgado who has a career threating hip injury. The Cubs have Derrek Lee who is not putting up numbers like he did a couple of years ago.
I say get a player on there roster right now and a couple minor leaguers.

That is some things I will do and I will always keep you updated on the Cubs.

Todays Game Postponed

Today's game has been postponed due to the weather and will be made up on July 30.

Randy Wells who was supposed to pitch today, will pitch tomorrow and Marshall who was supposed to pitch tomorrow will pitch some time next week. Rich Harden is still set to go on Sunday.

I will keep you posted.

Thursday, May 14, 2009

Update on Zambrano, Peavy, Bradley

Breaking News: Milton Bradley's suspension was reduced from 2 games to 1. Bradley will miss tomorrows's game against the Astros.

Zambrano ran and did some fielding exercises today for the first time since injuring his hamstring on May 3rd. Zambrano said he is ready to pitch Sunday for the Florida State League. Zambrano is set to pitch a week from tomorrow on May 22rd.

Stark says, as for a possible Jake Peavy-to-the-Cubs deal, Stark writes "The Cubs' ownership limbo now looks as if it might stretch until Christmas Eve. So who knows whether Cubs GM Jim Hendry will even be released from captivity in time to pursue another Peavy deal come July."

I will keep you posted.

Wednesday, May 13, 2009

5/13 Notes

When Zambrano returns, Wells will still be on the team either in the bullpen or the starting rotation. Marshall and Wells will pitch this week and who ever does better will be the fifth starter and the other one will go to the bullpen. I say put Wells in the fifth spot, in the rotation and put Marshall in the bullpen so Hendry can release or trade Cotts.

Also the league is looking at when Dempster threw the ball at Ryan Braun's head in the past Milwaukee series. I have no clue why they will be looking at the call because Braun did nothing before that at bat and it was a pitch that got away from Dempster, Dempster said it was a pitch to move him from the plate. Another reason this makes no sense because when the Cubs played the St. Louis Cardinals in the past series Alfonso Soriano got hit in the head and in a bat before Soriano hit a home run.

I will keep you posted.

Update On Ramirez and Zambrano

On Saturday or Sunday, Zambrano will make a rehab start for Daytona Cubs. I will imagine that the Cubs are looking for a return for Zambrano in about a week.

Aramis Ramirez told Bruce Levine the rehap on his shoulder will take 6 weeks. if not longer. Levine keeps mentioning that the shoulder may require suergery at the end of the season. The Cubs may be looking for a power third baseman or who can make contact and get on base because the guys on Baseball Tonight said he swing will take a while to get back.

My trade proposal: Trade Lee and Cotts (Just to give rid of him) for Figgins and another player.

The Cubs then put Figgins at second, move Fontenot back to the utility roll (where he is better at), trade Miles for a PTBNL and then use Scales as a backup infielder with Freel (Who is also the fifth outfielder and pinch runner).

What do you think, just leave a comment of what you think of it.

I will keep you posted on everything Cubs.

Notes, awards in Month and a half.

Cubs.com reports that Derrek Lee will not be placed on the DL.

MVP: Alfonso Soriano- I have to give it to him because of his home runs and for taking more walks this year.

LVP: Milton Bradley- I have to give it to him because he is not hitting the ball. I still think in about a month, he will be the same hitter as last year.

Best pitcher: Rich Harden- I think he is the best pitcher because his first 3 outings he was averaging 10 strikeouts and has a record of 3-1.

Worst Pitcher: I think it is Dempster because he gets a lot of money in the off season and doesn't live up to the contract. He does not look like the 17 game winner the Cubs had last year.

Best relief pitcher: Angel Guzman- It was between him and Marmol but I think Guzman is the best by a centermeter. Guzman is only 27 and has a nice fastball with command, which Pinella likes. I think it should go Guzman in the seventh, Marmol in the eigth and Gregg in the nineth because Heilman is struggling.

Worst relief pitcher: Neal Cotts- This one was the eaisest one to me because he can't throw strikes and gives up too many runs. I think when lefty, minor leaguer Waddell is ready the Cubs will trade or Cut Neal Cotts and bring him up.

Those are my awards for a month and a half. I will always keep you posted on everything Cubs.

Quick Updates

The Cubs called up pitcher Jose Ascaino and put pitcher Chad Fox on the 15 day DL.

Aramis Ramirez can't do any baseball activities for at least 3 weeks and could be out for 2 months.

Derrek Lee was in Chicago today getting a MRI on his neck and is questionble for Tuesday vs the Padres.

Ryan Freel in his first at-bat with the Cubs, he lined a single up the middle. It came in a pinch hit role.

I will keep you posted.

Injury Update

Update 6:00: After pitching in yesterdays game, Chad Fox is going to be placed on the 15 day DL with a elbow injury.

Aramis Ramirez was placed on the 15 day DL today with a shoulder injury and the Cubs activated Ryan Freel from the 15 day DL.

Derrek Lee was supposed to play tonight but is still having problems with his neck. Now he is schedule to play on Tuesday against the Padres.

Ryan Freel was activated today, off the 15 day DL and was in the original lineup but he has tightness in his hamstring.

I will keep you posted.

Notes, Trade

Sale of Cubs Delayed

According to the Chicago Tribune, the Cubs sale will not be completed before the owners meeting on May 20-21.

Despite good intentions on both sides, the transaction will not completed by the owners' meeting, said sources familiar with the negotiations. But a second blown deadline is not an indication that the deal is in trouble, sources said. One person who asked not be identified said the sale is "proceeding slowly but proceeding."

"Sources blamed the slow pace of negotiations on several factors. The double whammy of a recession and a financial-sector meltdown has made it difficult for the Ricketts to secure financing. The family raised $400 million for the deal by selling personal stock holdings and planned to borrow the rest."

Also according to the Tribune, "both sides are reluctant to put a timetable on completing the deal." Baseball owners are not scheduled to meet again until August.

I will keep you posted.

Carlos Zambrano Cubs win 4th straight

Breaking News. Carlos Zambrano has been placed on the 15 day DL. Bruce Levine also had it on his blog. This is just for precautionary reasons and probably could of pitch this week sometime. This makes no sense when Bradley and Ramirez missed a lot of time and was never placed on the DL.

The Chicago Tribune reports that Cubs 2B Bobby Scales took grounder at shortstop before Monday's game against the Giants, a sign he could soon be called up from Triple-A.

Randy Wells is going to get the spot start for Zambrano on Friday.

Luis Vizcaino was officially released on Monday. The Cubs Designated him for assignment about a week ago.

The Cubs beat the San Francisco Giants 6-4.

That improves there record to 14-11. The Cubs still have not lost in May going 4-0.

The Cubs play the San Francisco Giants at 1:20 today.

Today Starters: Tim Lincecum (2-1) vs Sean Marshall (0-1).

I will keep you updated on Big Z and other news.

Cubs 3-0 in May

The Cubs beat the Florida Marlins for the third straight game 6-4. Derrek Lee got a grand slam and Mike Fontenot got a solo home run.

That improves there record to 13-11.

In the fifth inning Carlos Zambrano pushed down a bunt to the third base side and while hustling down to first base Zambrano strained his hamstring. He will have it examined Sunday night and the Cubs will know more tomorrow. Lou Pinella said it is in the belly of the hamstring.

Lou Pinella said Aramis Ramirez should be ready for Monday night against the San Francisco Giants.
