Taking Time Off...

I know I've very inactive as of the last 2 months or so, and I apologize. I just have been too busy as of late with school, work and other activities.

Instead of writing posts here and there, I decided to just take time off, until I'm not as busy. I love to write, but no time makes it hard. I had the blog for about 2-3 years and it has been fun.

When I have time, I will get back to writing more posts.

NO Dice-K for Fukudome Trade...

We heard a couple weeks back that the Cubs and Red Sox were talking about a trade that would send the Cubs Dice-K and the Red Sox Fukudome, per Phil Rogers. Now just yesterday Phil Rogers said this trade could be in the works. However, Peter Gammons shot down Rogers and said it's not happening.

"Daisuke Matsuzaka’s name did not come up during the Chicago Cubs’ recent organizational meetings, according to a baseball source. That doesn’t preclude the possibility the Cubs and Red Sox had a conversation about him as part of a proposed deal for Cubs outfielder Kosuke Fukudome, as the Chicago Tribune’s Phil Rogers reported Wednesday.

But it’s a deal that doesn’t make much sense. It’s understandable that the Cubs would seek to dump a bad contract in Fukudome, who is due to be paid $13.5 million in 2011. But Matsuzaka has two years left on his deal, at $10 million per, so if the Cubs are looking to free up some money for another move, like signing free agent Adam Dunn, a Fukudome-Matsuzaka swap has limited benefit."

I honestly wouldn't get this trade for the Cubs because it takes a spot in the rotation, Dice-K has one more year more than Kosuke on his contract and Dice-K has not pitched good as of late.

So, like the report said, I doubt this happens. I give it a 1% of happening.

Here's the latest news and notes. Also, some rumors.

Aramis Ramirez excercised his 14.6M option yesterday. He still has to file the paperwork and that has to be turned in my Thursaday at Midnight.

Ryne Sandberg will leave the Cubs organization. He will look for other jobs out there. I hope for the best for Ryno!

The Cubs will remain in Mesa, after the Mesa voters voted to keep the Cubs.

Brett Jackson has been sent him from the AZL because of an infection. He had a good run and showed that he has what it takes to make the majors.

Cubs minor league pitcher Chris Carpetner could make the Cubs bullpen out of spring training. He has hit triple digits in the AZL.

The Cubs will add pitcher Chris Archer to the 40 man roster soon.

Xavier Nady is not expected to return next season.

Rumors:

Jim Hendry likes Nick Johnson and he could be a Cub, if his mkedical records are good. They will pursue him then.

The Cubs will have their eye on Kerry Wood to be apart of the pen next season.

The Cubs are expected to make a run for Adrian Gonzalez next season and XM radio says they have what it takes to get him. The Cubs will most likely have to depart with Vitters and JJ, among others.

Player Profile: Jay Jackson...

Jay Jackson is a 23 year old pitcher, who the Cubs drafted in the 9th round of the 2008 draft. He has made his way through the Cubs minor leagues in a good pace, as he inches closer to making the majors. He's currently playing for the Iowa Cubs in Triple A. Who Ryne Sandberg was the manager. Will Sandberg be back in Triple A to coach him if he starts the 2011 season down there? Only time will tell us....but he was offer the position again. Jay Jackson started the 2010 season with Triple A, but as a reliever not a starter. However, he was switched to the rotation because Andrew Cashner went to the bullpen. But, Cashner is now a good pitcher for the Cubs bullpen.

Jay Jackson was alright last year, as he posted a 11-8 record with a 4.63era, 48 walks, 119 strikeouts in 157.1 innings pitched. As you can see, nothing spectacular but a decent year for him. I like his strikeout to walks ratio. Jackson has 4 or 5 pitches than he can throw for strikes and get outs. I think he will be a good pitcher in the Cubs rotation some day. When will that come? I don't know, but I expect next year some time.

I don't believe Jackson is playing winter ball because I have not seen stats on him or any news-notes on how he is doing. Maybe he just wants the time off from baseball and to relax. I think if he did play winter ball and he performs well, I think there would be a better chance for him to make the team out of spring training (Cubs).

Bruce Levine says Jay Jackson will make the Cubs sometime next season, if it's out of spring training or a mid-summer call-up. Member, we don't know because we have to see if Jim Hendry makes any moves to the starting rotation this winter (FA signings, trades, etc). Also, Ben Badler who writes for Baseball America heard from a scout that Jackson has a nice fastball with a nasty strikeout pitch.

Jackson is not considered a top prospect in all of baseball or even in the Cubs organization, but he has been recognize around the league. He has been in the rankings of the Cubs top 10 prospects, around the mid (4-7). Before the 2010 season, Baseball America had him ranked 98 in all of baseball. That's actually not too bad with everything into consideration. But, will he drop in the 2011 ranks? I think there is a good chance he will. The Cubs Reporter had Jackson ranked 6th in the Cubs organization and I have to agree with that rank. I think he fits right around their.

However, if the Cubs want a top tier pitcher like Zack Greinke, Jackon will most likely have to be included. But, I don't see that happening as Jim Hendry will be reluctant to trade top prospects and the price for Greinke will be too high. Will Greinke be in Cubbie blue to start the 2011 season? I say one out of a million. So, N0!

My prediction: He will make the Cubs during the 2011 season. I don't think he will make the club out of spring training because all 5 spots would be taken. However, I see him being a call-up because a pitcher is slumping, injured or traded. As for being a Cub down the road, I see him as a 3rd or 4th starter in the rotation and he could be one of the best. I just hope for the best for him and can't wait to see what he does this spring training.

Bruce Levine's Chat: 10/26...

I'm back! Now to Levine's chat recap. I will share information that I thought was interesting:

1) The Cubs will find out next Tuesday, if there 84M training facility will be approved in Mesa.

2) Adam Dunn is still the Cubs number 1 priority.

3) Kosuke Fukudome is likely to be traded.

4) The Cubs could look at Cliff Lee, but nothing major. Don't look for any legs on the Lee movement.

5) Levine does not even know how much the money the Cubs will have to spend on free agents this winter.

6) Levine states there's a good chance Hendry is gone after 2 years when Quade's contract is up.

7) Jim Hendry can probably fit Adam Dunn in, if Kosuke is traded.

8) The Cubs will have interest in bringing Kerry Wood back, but the Yanks are preparing a contract for him.

10) Levine thinks Brett Jackson and Jay Jackson will make the team sometime next year. While, Archer could be a summer call-up.

Next week I'll have his recap again. In the next few days, I will have another player profile; that will be Jay Jackson.

Player Profile: Josh Vitters....

Josh Vitters is a 21 year old third baseman, who the Cubs drafted in 2007 with the 3rd overall pick. He was 17 years old and was drafted out of high school. He's currently playing for Double A Tennessee Smokies in the Chicago Cubs minor league system. Vitters could be making the transition from third base to first base. As he is playing first base in the Arizona Fall League, but he is also third base too.

Vitters started off the 2010 season in the minors with High A Daytona posting a .291/.350/.445/.795 with 3hr and 13rbi in 28 games and 110 at-bats. Then, Vitters was called up to Double A and posted a .223/.292/.383/.676 with 7hr and 26rbi in 63 games and 206 at-bats. Before breaking his wrist and being out for the remainder of the season.

Vitters is currently playing in the Arizona Fall League and he's not doing so well. The league pretty much just started and as of right now he's posting a .222/.211/.244/.655 with 1hr and 5rbi in 4 games and 18 at-bats. Like I already mention, he's playing third base and trying to make the transition to first base. He's trying to make the transition to first base because the Cubs ordered it. His stats don't look good in the AZL, but it's still early and he's coming off a bad wrist injury. Just give him time and hope he comes around.

Vitters was once the Cubs top rated prospect, before the top spot was taken over by 20 year old SS Starlin Castro. Who is now the Cubs starting SS. He was ranked number one in the Cubs system in 2008 and 2009 and 2010 he was ranked number two. He was ranked number 43 in 2008, 51 in 2009 and 70 in 2010 in the whole minor league system for all 30 MLB teams. That is all according to Baseball America.

Vitters has gone through his share of injuries. He has suffered two injuries, in which he missed significant time. That is one reason why he's on a setback from reaching the majors.

Also, Vitters might not even be a Cub when and if he makes the majors because he could be traded. Vitters has been in trade talks for the past 2-3 years, but general manager Jim Hendry was reluctant to trade him because of his potential. If Vitters would have been included, the Cubs would have either 2B Brian Roberts or P Jake Peavy. Josh Vitters was the deal breaker in both deals. But, Jim Hendry might be more open to trade him because of his struggles in the minors. With the recent news that the Royals will take offers for P Jack Greinke. The Cubs are expected to be a team after him and most likely will have to offer Vitters in a deal with more. So, will he be a Cub when he makes the majors? That question is still to be determine.

My Prediction: He will make the majors in 2012 as a first baseman. I think he will be a Cub because I don't see the Cubs acquiring Zack Greinke and the Cubs are more reluctant to trade young players. He will get an invite to spring training in 2011 to see how he produces. Vitters still has to work on his plate ability. He strikes out a good amount, swings at bad pitches and rarely walks. However, he does have ability as he has hr power and is a guy who can hit 3-5 in the batting order. I also think he will make the Cubs because the Cubs have no third baseman or first baseman in their minor league system are are not going to spend on players anymore.

Changes to Blog...

Sorry for the inactivity as of lately, but I'm working almost full-time and taking 5 classes in college. I would love to write posts, but I'm usually tired. However, I'm going to try and write 2-3 posts a week now.

My blog now will be more for the minors. I will have updates on the AZL and player profiles. Also, I will still have Bruce Levine's weekly chat on Tuesday. And, that will count as a post for the week.

But....I will still have updates on breaking news and only breaking news (FA signings, trades, etc). And, that will not count as a post for the week.

I hope the new changes are better.

I will have a player profile tomorrow and it will be Josh Vitters.

Bruce Levine's Chat: 10/12...

Here's a recap of Bruce Levine's chat....

1) The manager process could be entering the final process and a manager could be named soon. The 3 candidates are Mike Quade, Ryne Sandberg and Eric Wedge.

2) He mentioned 3 weeks ago that Olando Hudson will be the Cubs 2B come next season, but now he says it looks like they will keep 2B alone.

3) The Cubs never interviewed Alan Trammell because they don't look at him as a good manger. Also, it looks like Trammell will have to find a job elsewhere.

4) He thinks Archer needs more time in the minors and if he pitches good, he would not be surprise to see him as a mid-season call-up.

5) He says the Cubs need a leadoff man, but has not heard what they are going to do at that position.

6) He thinks Derrek Lee's career could be over because of past injuries. That would suck.

7) He said "I'm sure Jacoby Ellisbury would be a guy the Cubs would like to have".

8) Renovations for Wrigley in 2014 seem to be on a hold. It still will get done but the time frame in unknown now.

9) No one knows when Vitters will be ready and even at 3B. He could be a 1B if and when he hits the majors. He will be playing 1B in the AFL.

10) He said Kerry Wood will always be welcomed back to Chicago, but he does not see the Yankees not offering him a new contract.

If I was Jim Hendry...

Here's my yearly trend of "If I was Jim Hendry" what I would do this offseason. I am going to write in 1st person as if I was Jim Hendry. This is just for fun and I want to see how I do. I'm going to try and be realistic as best as I can.

1) Hire Ryne Sandberg as the manager: My first choice was Joe Girardi but I hear he is staying with the New York Yankees. As I'm trying to make the team younger and since Ryne Sandberg was the Double A and Triple A manager, he would know the players the best and how to work with them. Also, he does not take anything for granted. I know Mike Quade did good in relief of Lou Piniella, but that Castro benching and playing Koyie Hill over Welnington Castillo drove me nuts. That's why I did not pick him as manager. I also do know Sandberg does not have major league managing before but he had a good track record in the minors. Quade didn't either, before taking over the Cubs for about two months.

2) Sign-Trade for 1B Adam LaRoche: The D'backs still don't know if his 7.5M option would be exercise, so I would trade for or sign him. I would sign him to a 1 year contract worth 7M, with a team option for 2012 worth 8M. If LaRoche's option is exercised and I think the D'backs would shop him, I would trade utility man Jeff Baker and starting pitcher Randy Wells. Baker was good but with the emergence of Darwin Barney, he has to be traded. Wells has looked good at times but he was really inconsistent this year and I think pitchers in the minors would do a better job (i.e. Archer and Jackson). I like a lot in LaRoche, besides his high strikeout rate and his low walking ability. I would hope the best hitting coach in the business (Rudy) will help him. He does have pop in his swing, he can bat in the middle of the order (3-5), a left-handed bat and he plays good defense. And, with the fielders throwing the ball in the dirt, a good defensive 1B would help out a lot.

3) Sign RP Kerry Wood: I would love for a Cubs-Wood reunion and I'm going to try and make it possible. Wood struggle with the Indians, but since being trade to a good team (Yankees) he has been lights out. Maybe it has to do something with the Indians being no good. I would sign him to a 1 year contract worth 6M and with a team option for 2012 worth 7.5M (Plus incentives). Only because of recent injuries. This is only if the Yankees do not retain him.

4) Re-Sign Nady: Nady said he would like to return to the club and I think that wouldn't be a bad idea. He would be the Cubs back-up 1B and 4th-5th OF like he was assign to when the Cubs signed him last offseason. But, this time, he will play more often, not once a week like he did before Lee was traded to the Braves. Nady showed he was useful as he hit and played wonderful defense at 1st base. The contract would be a one year deal worth 3M. plus incentives that could make it around 5-6M.

5) Trade Jeff Baker: I would trade Baker and save the 1-1.5M he would get in an arb raise. I know he killed lefties, but I think Barney can do the same, if not better in his place. Barney has shown great defense and he can play 3B, SS and 2B. Like I mention above he would be in the deal for 1B Adam LaRoche. If I was for some reason not able to trade him, I would non-tender him and still save the 1-1.5M he would earn in 2011.

6) Non-Tender Koyie Hill: This is such an obvious move, as Hill can't hit and plays OK defense. So, he has nothing spectacular to offer. He took playing time from Castillo in 2010 and that made me mad. I think Castillo would be a good fit, but if not, our system has more catchers that can do better than Hill. My pick goes to Welington Castillo. This would also save us about 1-1.3M.

7) Trade Kosuke Fukudome: This is a move that has to be made as the the OF is already crowded as it is. I would take on half of the 13M owe to him next season and that way I should be able to find a taker. Kosuke started hitting the ball as of late (when Piniella left) and he plays stellar defense. I would just look for prospects in return. So, this move will save us around 6.5M.

8) Shop Byrd: I would love to keep Byrd, but Brett Jackson who is supposedly on the same path as Starlin Castro was, could make the team in May or June. So, we will have Soriano in left, Jackson in CF and Colvin in RF. Then, Colvin would be the 4th OF if Byrd is still on the team or what. I would not trade Byrd in the offseason because what happens if Jackson struggles in the minors and the plan is on delay. We would be screwed. Also, this would allow me to see what value Byrd has. Then, if Jackson plays good next season, I could trade Byrd because his stock is high right now and I doubt he has the same season as last year. I will also keep an eye on Jackson this winter as he is playing for the USA.

9) Sign Brandon Webb: I think this could be a good signing because he will not cost much and he's a former all-star. Webb has gone through arm injuries the past season, but this could be a low risk high reward kind of a deal. I would sign him to a 1 year contract worth 1M, with a team option for the next season worth 3M. Plus incentives that could make the 1M into 3-5M.

10)Arb raises: All of these are 1 year contracts. I would offer Sean Marshall 1.3M, Angel Guzman 850K, Tom Gorzelanny 1.2M, and Geovany Soto 3M. I would sign Guzman just one more time and if he comes back healthy, it could be a good signing, but if not I would release him or non-tender him next offseason. I was thinking about signing Geovany Soto to an extension in which it would buy off all his arb years, but I thought this would be cheaper for the next season. In which it would. Maybe next offseason.

11) Sign Carlos Marmol to an extension: This would buy out the final 2 years of arbitration. He's 27 years old. I would sign him to as 3 year extension worth 18M at 6M per year. He has shown to be worth that contract and the contract is not long because for some reason RP don't pitch the same way for years. Also, in case of injury.

12) Release Silva: I would pay the 5.5M left on his contract, to save roster spots for a veteran or a youngster who shines. I will not be able to trade Silva, unless I take a bad contract in exchange and I don't want to do that. I think this is the best for the ball club.

13) Hope the youngsters shine and make the team: I would hope 2 pitching youngsters shine in spring training...Chris Archer and Jay Jackson. Chris Archer was one of the better pitchers in the minors last year and has been thought to make the team out of spring training. He came over in the Mark DeRosa trade. I will also keep an eye on him, as he is pitching for USA this winter. Also, another pitcher to keep any eye on is Jay Jackson. He was OK last year, but he has a good fastball and a good breaking ball. I was told he is going to be a good pitcher. Like I mention above, Castillo and Barney would also make the team out of spring training. Also, Brad Snyder being the 4th OF. He played good defense in limited time and he has potential to hit and I hope he does.

14) Other Notes that will be different from the 2010 team: My plan from the offseason moves would move Tom Gorzelanny from the rotation to the bullpen, Castillo will be back-up catcher, Barney will the utility guy and the pitching (both SP and RP) will be completely different.

15) Potential mid-season call-ups: OF Brett Jackson, OF Sam Fuld, P Chris Carpetner, 3B Marquez Smith and more depending on their performance next season.

16) Sign Felipe Lopez: I know he struggle with the Cardinals last year, but he has potential and is a cheap option. He would be a utility guy like Barney, but Barney would be ahead of him for playing time. Lopez can play 3B, SS, 2B, 1B and the OF. I would sign him to a 1 year contract worth 1.5M plus incentives that can make the 1.5M into 3-4M. Also, I would add a team option in there worth 3M for 2011.

As Tom Ricketts already mentioned, the payroll will decrease from this season to next season. So, I could not offer big contracts or spend a lot. I would spend...counting FA signings, trades, arb raises: With me trading for LaRoche: 30.5M, and could go up to 40M or so with incentives but unlikely. With me signing LaRoche: 30M, that can go up to 40M with incentives but very unlikely. But, that does no account the 6.5M I save on Kosuke's contract. Just subtract than from the totals and that's where I would be at. Not too bad. The roster would be complete with all those moves.

However, I don't know if the player would accept the deal, the team accept the trade, if the player wants to come to Chicago, etc. That's what it makes this harder. But, I tried my best and this is what I came up with. It was fun and that's all that matters. I think this team would be in contention, if the young players shine and if the vets play to their potential, but if not, we can wish 2011 good bye.

Moves the Cubs could make in the Offseason...

I said last Tuesday that I will have Bruce Levine's chat recap, but he did not say anything we already didn't know. I instead will have a write up on potential moves the Cubs could make in the offseason.

1) Hire a Manager: This is SO obvious, as the Cubs can't go into next season without one. They could have one within a week and as of right now, it sounds like the guy will be Mike Quade. Bruce Levine predicts and said the 3rd week of October, Jim Hendry will hire a manager. I'm not too thrill about Quade being named manager as he was third on my list. I had Girardi one, Sandberg two and Quade three. There is still a chance the Cubs could hire Girardi, but it would be better if the Twins knock the Yanks out in the first round. Then, they could interview him earlier then. But, as of right now, Quade sounds like the guy.

2) Sign a 1B: I think this move will happen, as Quade wants Colvin to stay in the OF and he will likely be the manager. I don't think they will get a big name like Dunn, Pena or Matinez, but I think they could re-sign Nady or sign-trade for Adam LaRoche (depending on what the D'backs do with him). Too be honest, I like LaRocke because he has pop, plays good defense and is a left-handed bat.

3) Sign a RP: As we already know, the Cubs bullpen was not great last year, but they did turn it on as of late. I think the Cubs need one more RP that can help out. He could go along with Cashner, Marshall and Marmol who were great last year. I would love for the Cubs to sign Kerry Wood and it's not a bad idea, but what what I have read, its unlikely. Which kind of sucks because I would love a Cubs-Wood reunion.

4) Sign a 4th OF: I think the Cubs could sign one and two names that I wouldn't mind are Brad Hawpe and Pat Burrell because I like them and I think they could help in this role. But, the Cubs could open the season with Sam Fuld or Brad Snyder as the 4th OF, with Brett Jackson possibly getting the call to the majors fast. And, that way the Cubs don't spend money. I actually could see the Cubs going with Fuld or Snyder to open the season in 2011.

These are moves that I could see happen in the offseason, but with the payroll not determine yet and no manager, who knows what is going to happen this winter. There are a lot more moves that I see happening, but over the next 3-5 days, I'm going to have a post "If I was Jim Hendry" and I don't want to give much away. But, I do know this, it's going to be an interesting winter. I just can't wait!

Bruce Levine's Chat: 9/28...

I'm going to start a weekly trend, by having a post on Bruce Levine's chat. That will be every Tuesday, as that's the day he has the chat on. This chat was kind of weak and I mean there were not a lot of news that stood out. But, I will still present what I thought was kind of interesting.

1) He says the Cubs are in badly need of a set-up man, depending on what they do with pitcher Andrew Cashner. He thinks the Cubs should keep Cashner in the bullpen.

1) My take: It's kind of obvious that the Cubs are in badly need of a RP, even if they keep Cashner in the bullpen. Right now, I think the Cubs should keep Cashner in the pen because he has pitched pretty well and the Cubs have pitchers Jay Jackson and Chris Archer who are ahead of him in succeeding in the rotation. Also, I have a feeling the Cubs will put him as a starter, then a RP, then a starter, then a RP again and I think that will screw him it up. It could be a replay of the Samardzija situation.

2) The Red Sox have a lot of interest in Aramis Ramirez.

2) My take: I would be in favor of the Cubs dealing Ramirez. Only, if the Red Sox take on 75% of his contract, if not all and still trade mid level spects. But, I doubt that will happen. The Cubs could then go after Adrian Beltre if the Red Sox don't retain him, or call up 3B Marquez Smith from the minors who has put up nice stats. This could give the Cubs money for a 1B.

3) Levine keeps re-stating Adam Dunn is the Cubs top priority this offseason, but now he says "if the Cubs can afford him."

3) My take: We will keep hearing this until he's signed by the Cubs or another team. I think the Cubs will have enough money for him, but this will be the only impact FA signing. I would be fine if the Cubs sign him or not. It do not care if Adam Dunn is or isn't in Cubbie blue next year.

4) The Cubs are unlikely to sign Carl Crawford because they won't have the money. However, Levine does not say the Cubs will not pursue him because they could. He said there will be 8-10 teams bidding for him.

4) I would love the Cubs to sign Crawford because he brings speed that the Cubs need, a left handed bat and does have some pop, but not much. The only bad thing is, he's a OF and the Cubs don't have room unless they move Colvin to 1B but that's still TBD. However, I agree with Levine because I doubt they will have the money unless they unload 50% of Zambrano's, Kosuke and even Ramirez's contract.

5) Levine says Wood would be a good idea, but he also says I don't think going back in time is the best thing to do.

5) I totally disagree because Wood will help out a lot and every Cubs fan will be happy. He won't be too expensive, like other RP, but for some reason I think the Yanks will re-sign him.

Geo, Colvin OUT.....

I know the season is almost over, but 2 players season has come to an end early. Geovany Soto and Tyler Colvin were said yesterday that they will be out for the remainder of the season. Here's why:

Tyler Colvin:
This goes under as a freak incident, but Tyler Colvin was hit by a broken bat yesterday and a splinter of the bat went right through his chest. He was sent to the hospital right away and is expected to be in the hospital for 2-3 days with a tube in his chest, to make him breath easier. He was bleeding pretty good, but was listed in "stable condition". Castillo is the one who was hitting and the one who's bat broke and hit Colvin. There was a chance he could of die but he got lucky that it not go too far, but it did go pretty far. I hope for the best! It's sad how his rookie season went pretty well and he can't finish it on a positive not. But, it's baseball and this happens.

Geovany Soto:
We learned yesterday that Soto's season has come to an end because he's getting shoulder surgery on his arm today. It's a minor shoulder surgery and he will be ready in 3 months. In time for spring training. Now we will see Hill (ugh) and Castillo behind the plate now. I hope Castillo gets the majority of the playing time, as he could be the backup catcher next year over Hill who is looking more and more likely to be non-tender. An unconfirmed source says Castillo will be the backup catcher next year and Hill is as good as gone. I sure hope so!

I hope for the best in Colvin the most but also to Soto. It's funny how the Cubs win 13-3 with all backups playing and they lose 2 starters. At least their is only 2 weeks to the season is over.

Undercover Boss Filmed at Wrigley...

As Tom Ricketts watches his first season as Cubs owner go worse by the day. He still has fun with being the Cubs owner, by making the best of Wrigley. With that being said, the new hit show on CBS "Undercover Boss" was filmed at Wrigley for 9 days.

The show Undercover Boss is where the CEO or the head of the company goes undercover to their company and see how working conditions and how the employees are treated. Because, some people many know what they look like, they have to change their appearance. Tom Ricketts reportedly wore a beard when he went undercover.

Mr. Ricketts did numerous jobs, such as hot dog vendor, security, etc and was connected to all employees in a good fashion. Also, no one had a clue that it was him. Per David Kaplan.

This episode is reportedly being rushed into production as they want this episode to air as soon as possible. The source said it could air within a month. Per David Kaplan.

The second season of Undercover Boss will air Sunday, September 26th.

I saw the 1st season and I like it and it's a good show. I just can't wait for this season to air and see what jobs he done and what games he was at, if any. I think he would be at games. I expect you to watch the 2nd season, definitely this episode.

September Call-Ups Coming...

Sorry for the inactivity on my blog but I've been busy with work and school. I'll write up a fast post about what players are expected to get the call-up: All these players are from Triple A and Jim Hendry won't call them up until their season finishes.

1) P Mitch Atkins: He will see another stint in the majors and will probably be their for the rest of the season. Atkins has look good at times, but he has look like crap at times, like the whole bullpen.

2) P Jeff Stevens: He will also see another stint in the majors from previous reports. He came over in the Mark Derosa trade with the Indians. Just like Atkins, he has look good at times and times he gives up runs like crazy. I've notice when Stevens is called up at first, he pitches good but when he's sent down and re-called, he it bad. I don't get how that works.

3) P Jeff Samardzija: He started with the Cubs after spring training, but was sent down and never seen the majors again. This is an obvious move because Jeff has looked great in Triple A and he finally discovered a second pitch. Scouts say that second pitch is working out good for him. Jim Hendry said he will get a couple starts and with the pending injury of Gorzelanny...that could happen soon.

4) P Brian Schlitter: I'm not a big fan of him and could care less if he was re-called. But, he will be called up. Too me, he only has one pitch and that's a fastball. And, that's not good to be a major league pitcher.

5) OF Sam Fuld: He has a short stay in the majors but deserves to see another major league stint. Fuld is no way a starter but a good 4th OF because of his defense. His defense is spectacular in my mind. He has no fear for his body and goes all out when he plays.

6) OF Brad Snyder: He has never see the majors in his career and he's expected to see it for the first time soon. However, he's currently not on the 40 man roster and every spot is taken on the roster. The Cubs would have to make a move to call him up, then. I think there's a good chance the Cubs move Grabow from the 15 day DL to the 60 day DL. That would open a spot for Snyder. We'll just have to wait and see what the Cubs do.

7) Welington Castillo: He was on the bench for yesterdays game but was inactive because he wasn't officially called up. It was just in case the Cubs put Soto back on the DL...but that looks unlikely right now. I don't know if he's still with the Cubs or if he went back down to Triple A. I just hope he gets more playing time than his last stint, where he only made 2 starts.

The roster would be:

C: Soto, Hill, Castillo
1B: Nady, Hoffpauir
2B: DeWitt, Barney
3B: Ramirez, Baker
SS: Castro
OF: Soriano, Byrd, Colvin, Fukudome, Fuld, Snyder
P: Zambrano, Dempster, Wells, Gorzelanny, Coleman, Diamond, Marmol, Marshall, Cashner, Samardzija, Maine, Russell, Berg, Atkins, Schlitter, Mateo, Stevens, Silva (pending), Caridad (pending)

Esmalin Caridad and Carlos Silva have pending next to them because they could be activated from the DL and I think there's a good chance they both will be.

This moves are not official but Cubs.come reported these are the players that will get the call.

Colvin to not Start at 1B...

The 1B situation for next year is wide open again, after new manager Mike Quade said Tyler Colvin will not start at 1B any time soon. It was reported that Tyler Colvin will get a shot at 1B during the Nats series, but that was when Lou Piniella was manager. Many thought Colvin would be the leader for 1B next year but this changes many views. Along with me.

Tyler Colvin started taking grounders at 1B when long time 1B Derrek Lee was traded to Atlanta. That's when Colvin started taking grounders, during the Atlanta Braves series. Before Piniella stepped, due to ailing family members, he said Colvin would play 1B in the Nats series. But, that changed fast as interim Mike Quade said Colvin would not start at 1B any time soon. However, Quade did mention Colvin could move over to 1B late in the game.

Colvin has played 1B before...but when he was a sophomore in college. That was his last time, he also played 1B in high school.

Right now, Xavier Nady and Micah Hoffpauir will be playing 1B to finish out the season. But, that can change fast. Hoffpauir? Ugh, he can't hit in the majors and plays 1B so bad. Nady? OK, that's is fine. He has played 1B pretty good and has hit as of late with playing time.

This is how I see it, the Cubs are out and why not give Colvin a shot...maybe they will find out that he can play pretty good. But, that's unlikely. I just would like to see a new face over there and not Hoffpauir. But, for some reason the Cubs love him and I don't get it.

We'll just have to wait and see if Colvin plays 1B before the season ends. Quade just said "he won't play 1B any time soon", but he doesn't say he won't play 1B all season. Their is still hope Colvin will play 1B.

DLEE to the Braves...

Today is a sad day for Cub fans, as first baseman Derrek Lee was traded to the Atlanta Braves in exchange for 3 pitching prospects. Derrek Lee's 7 year tenure is over after a shaky 2010 season. Lee came over after the 2003 season where he won the world Series with the Florida Marlins. He came over via trade.

Derrek Lee was traded for pitching prospects Robinson Lopez, Tyrelle Harris, and Jeffrey Lorick. The Cubs will also pay some of the 3.4M left on Lee's contract. The amount is unknown.
The Cubs actually got a good return for Lee because he has back problems, older and is a free agent after the 2010 season. I think all 3 pitchers can make the team as a bullpen pitcher. Maybe, that's a little sarcasm but the pen needs new pitchers and who can get outs. It doesn't hurt to try new pitchers out at this point of the season. I think Lopez will be sent to Daytona, Harris to the Smokies and Lorick to Daytona or the Smokies.

This is a move that caught everybody by surprise, but in some ways it didn't. Lee will not be offer arbitration and there's a good chance he won't be back for the 2011 season. Lee has not played since Sunday after he left after 2 at-bats with back pain. Also, Lee rejected a trade to LAA before the deadline and that's another reason why this caught everybody by surprise. Lee said "He has a better chance to win in ATL and LAA probably won't even make the playoffs".

The Cubs will call-up 1B Micah Hoffpauir to take his spot on the roster and could get the start tomorrow in place of Nady. We have seen Hoffpauir this year and he was pathetic. I think it's time for another 1B to get called and I would like to see Brian LaHair get the call to the majors. He has put up pretty good stats for Triple A this season.

Me, like many other Cub fans are sadden with the departure of Lee, but like I said, this is a move that had to be done. I hope for the best for Lee in ATL and hope he wins a world series with ATL. It's funny because Lee will be back at Wrigley when ATL play the Cubs this weekend at Wrigley. I expect Lee to get a standing ovation when he takes hist 1st at-bat at Wrigley on Friday. Too bad I will miss it because of work.

I expect at least 1 more trade before the Aug 31st deadline. 2 players that could be gone are IF Jeff Baker and 1B/OF Xavier Nady. I'll keep you posted as more moves could be on the way soon.

Koyie Hill Should be Non-Tender...

With the season starting to get worse and worse by the day, I thought I would look at a move that needs to be done in the offseason. The Cubs should non-tender catcher Koyie Hill.

I think this move will help the Cubs now and in the future. The backup catcher, then, will be 23 year old Welington Castillo. I think Castillo is a backup and not a starting catcher for his career. He was called up when Geovany Soto was placed on the DL, but has only started one game because Piniella is playing the veteran. Koyie Hill is on the team because of his defense and throwing out baserunners, but both have been so bad lately and he's useless now. Like I said, Castillo has only played one game, but from what I've saw, he has a cannon of an arm and plays pretty good defense. Also, he has some pop and will hit for a mid 200 average. Unlike Hill who really has none of that.

If the Cubs did in fact release Hill, they will save money, not a lot, but some. Also, the Cubs are trying to get younger and this will be a move in the right direction. I think their is a good chance Castillo could get 2 starts a week and maybe a late substitution for Soto. Castillo can also learn information from Soto behind the plate.

I think there is a 60% chance Koyie Hill will be non-tendered and with that percentage increasing by the day.

Castillo should be in the lineup today, but as we all know Piniella, Hill will be in there again and that is the wrong move. Definitely after how bad Hill played yesterday. The good news is, Castillo will play tomorrow because Casey Coleman is pitching and they pitch together for Triple A this year. Castillo was Coleman's battery mate.

So, do you think Koyie Hill will be non-tendered?

Mike Fontenot Traded to the Gaints...

Jim Hendry worked out a trade with the Giants today. The Cubs traded IF Mike Fontenot to the Giants for OF Evan Crawford.

This is not a surprise move and I knew Mike Fontenot would be traded before September 1st. Fontenot has been good in limited action, but this is a move that had to be done. Fontenot lost his starting job, when Castro was called up to play SS. The Cubs will save some money, not much in this deal. They also will save money for next season.

The Cubs have one more spot open on their 40 man-roster and I expect SS Darwin Barney to be called up. The Cubs now, have no back-up SS for Castro and Barney is a SS. I think he will play against lefties at 2B and to give a day off for Starlin Castro. Unlike Fontenot, Barney is a true SS.

I'm not a fan of Crawford and his stats show why. He's not hitting for average and does not walk much. But, he has speed. If he ever makes the majors, I see him as a Joey Gathright type player. A bench player and a pinch runner. And, that's IF he makes the majors. I can see him not making the majors.

I think the Cubs could of got more for Fontenot. Maybe, just a better spect. I just don't like the spect. I guess the only positive is, we will see another rookie and that's what I like. Lets just see how Barney plays when and if he gets the call to the majors.

A Look at Possible September Call-Ups...

With all major league rosters expanding in about 3 weeks or so. I thought, I would look at players that might get the call to the majors. The Cubs have 39 players active on the 40 man-roster. Angel Guzman is on the 40 man-roster, but since he's on the 60 day DL, he does not take up a spot. These are players who have not seen the majors this year.

SS Darwin Barney: I expect him to be called up and he will platoon with Blake DeWITT at 2B. DeWITT plays against righties and Barney plays against lefties. Also, he could give a day off to SS Starlin Castro. He's a true SS unlike Mike Fontenot who's the backup SS. Barney has put up a nice average this year. He's batting .300 in 474 at-bats, but he does not take a lot of walks and his OBP is not too great. GM Jim Hendry said Barney has a future with the Cubs and a report said Barney is expected to be the next Cub to be called up. He's currently not on the 40 man-roster.

1B Brain LaHair: He's another one I expect to be called up. He has posted nice numbers for Triple A this year. In my own opinion, I would of liked to see him called up over 1B Micah Hoffpauir. Hoffpauir was called up when 1B Derrek Lee was placed on the bereavement list. Hoffpaur is good at Triple A, but sucks in the majors. LaHair has posted a nice season and I think it would of been fair to see him up over Hoffpauir. He's currently not on the 40 man-roster.

2B Matt Camp: He probably won't get called up, but I would like to see him in the majors. I've been a fan of him because he will post average stats and can play 3B. He made the transition from 3B to 2nd this year. Just like DeWITT who has done the same thing this year. So, I highly doubt he gets called up because he's just average and the Cubs really don't need another IF like that. I can see Ryan Theriot in him. He's currently not on the 40 man-roster.

P Jeff Samardzija: I know he started this season in the majors, but has not been re-called since being sent down. I'm positive he will be called up. He has posted nasty stats before yesterdays game. H was 9-1 with a low 3's era and that's not bad. He's starting for Triple A, but he's a RP for the Cubs. He finally got a 2nd pitch and that's a cutter. When he has been in the majors, he only had a fastball. Scouts have said, the cutter has been a good pitch and Jeff is getting a lot of strikeouts on that pitch. That's a good sign and it would be nice, if he can keep that up in the majors. He's currently on the 40 man-roster .

OF Sam Fuld: I'm 50-50 on him getting called up. He has not been good in Triple A, but his glove is stellar and I like that. He hustles on every play and has no fear for his body. It depends what happens with other roster moves. Then, it will be known if Fuld will or not be called up. He's currently on the 40 man-roster.

C Welington Castillo: I know he's on the Cubs roster now, but he could be sent down before September comes. He was called up, when Soto was placed on the 15 day DL. Soto is expected to be on the DL, for only the 15 days. Castillo has put up OK stats in the minors. I think, if Castillo puts up the same numbers as Hill or better numbers, he will be the backup catcher next year. Then, the Cubs will non-tender Hill and that will make him a free agent. The Cubs will save money on that move too. Castillo is expected to be in the Cubs lineup tonight vs. lefty Barry Zito. I'm looking forward to that. He's currently on the 40 man-roster.

1B Micah Hoffpauir: I know he's on the Cubs roster right now but he could be sent back down when Lee is activated from the bereavement list. Lee could come off the list as early as Friday. Even if Hoffpauir is sent down before September, he will be called up again. I have no doubt in my mind. At least, the Cubs can see if he can ever hit in the majors. He destroys Triple A but does no damage in the majors. And, I don't get why and how. He's currently on the 40 man roster.

P Rafael Dolis: He has been pretty good this year, but is still in Double A. So, I don't know if the Cubs would be willing to call him up. Also, he's a starter and there are no openings in the starting rotation. I am pretty sure, the Cubs won't put him as a RP because he could have a pretty good career ahead of him as a starter. I don't expect any starters from the minors to be called up. He's currently on the 40 man roster.

Players that might get the call back to the majors. These players have seen the majors, sometime this year. We will probably see most, if not all the players be re-called.

1) P Mitch Atkins
2) P Brain Schlitter
3) P Jef Stevens
4) P Jeff Gray (I don't see him being re-called)

Players that could be the "Tyler Colvin" this year. However, I don't expect their to be a "Tyler Colvin" call-up.

OF Tony Campana: He's putting up a nice season for the Smokies this year and could make the majors soon. But, he's getting up their in age. At the age of 24. This can be the true "Tyler Colvin". He's an OF, average defender, 24 and a lefty. However, I think their are other OF in front of him to be called up. Like, Sam Fuld and James Adduci. He's currently not on the 40 man-roster.

P Ryan Buchter: He has put up OK stats in the minors, but is a relief pitcher and the Cubs need to try new faces in the bullpen. Because, what they have now in the pen is not working out. It would be nice for the Cubs to call another pitcher up, to make his major league debut. But like I said, it's very unlikely. He's currently not on the 40 man-roster.

Like I said on top, the Cubs would have to clear spots on the 40 man-roster to call up some players. Right now, they have 1 spot open to call-up 1 player. Here are some scenarios to make room on the 40 man-roster.

1) If the Cubs know, John Grabow and/or Esmalin Caridad will not come back this season, they could move them to the 60 day DL from the 15 day DL. That will open 2 more spots on the 40 man-roster.
2) Mike Fontenot, Jeff Baker and Xavier Nady could be claimed and traded. I think that all 3 will be traded, time September 1st comes. Then, that will open 3 more spots on the 40 man-roster.

But, here are moves the Cubs could make; that will not help make room on the 40 man-roster.

1) The Cubs could activate P John Grabow, P Esmalin Caridad, P Carlos Silva and C Geovany Soto from the 15 day DL. Nothing will happen with the 40 man-roster, but spots will be taken up. That means, we will see less players from the minors. Also, the Cubs will activate Derrek Lee from the bereavement list in the next week or so.

I know all these moves won't happen, but they could. We just have to wait and see what happens, come September. With activations off the DL, waiver trades and call-ups.

Could we see Dunn in Cubbie Blue Next Year...

With the 2010 season in shame for the Cubs. I thought I would go ahead and look at a move that could happen for the offseason. Could we see Adam Dunn in Cubbie Blue next year?

With no news swirling the Cubs right now, and the Cubs have no first baseman under contract for the 2011 season. I will look at that situation right now, with the possible signing of Adam Dunn.

Adam Dunn is currently the Nationals 1B and is a free agent after this year. The Nats can still try and sign him as Dunn wants to stay in Washington and they would like the same thing. They have the rest of the season, counting playoffs and 2 weeks after the World Series ends to try and re-sign him. After that, it's fair play and all teams can start talking with him about a deal. Like I said, the Nats would like to re-sign him, but they haven't already because they can't reach a deal. So, from what I've seen, Dunn will not be a National next season. The Nats are offering him less years and money for him to come back in 2011.

I have an unconfirmed source, that says the Cubs will be aggressive in pursuing a big left-handed bat for 1B. He names Adam Dunn and Carlos Pena. Out of those two, I pick Dunn because he's one year younger, hits for a better average and has more power. Dunn's home run total, will double at Wrigley and that's what I would like to see. He always kills the Cubs at Wrigley, but on the opposite team. It would be nice to see him kill the ball at Wrigley, for the good team.

In the first four months of the season, Dunn has posted a .277avg, 28hr and 71rbi. I think his stats will improve at Wrigley and as a Cub because it's a smaller park, he will have a good power bat behind him in Ramirez and he's playing for the Nats this year. Playing for the Nats, will never help.

I think Dunn will be looking for a 3 year contract, worth anywhere from 30-40M and I think that's too much for an offensive guy with no defense. But, as you know teams will pay him that because it's the MLB. GM's in the MLB always overpay players, even if they're not worth it. I just hope Jim Hendry is not that GM to offer him a contract like that.

The Nationals have been shopping Dunn for about 3 weeks now, but could not pull off a trade before the July 31st non waiver trade deadline. However, the Nats placed Adam Dunn on waivers about 3 days ago and was claimed by an unknown team. The unknown team will have 48 hours (well, it's less now) to try and work out a trade for him. The team is most likely an NL team and my guess it's the Giants, The Giants were interested in Dunn before the trade deadline and are in need of a 1B badly. And, they will need a 1B next year too. So, I think there is a chance they can re-sign Dunn before he hits the free agent market. But, that's just speculation on my part.

If the Cubs do sign Dunn, that means Lee's years with the Cubs will be numbered. Even though Lee will not be a Cub, he will always be remembered. I'm not going to lie, but I will miss Derrek Lee at 1B a lot. Lee will come way cheaper than Dunn and even Pena for that matter. Lee has said he would like to finish his career as a Cub and Cubs owner-chairman Tom Ricketts would like the same. But, in all fairness, that's looking unlikely as every day passes. The one thing I will miss and all Cubs fans too, is his glove. Lee saves so many errors from the Cubs infield and that would be dearly missed. Because, having Dunn at 1B will make the Cubs error total rise. GM Jim Hendry can offer Derrek Lee compensation, but I do not expect him to do so, in fear of him accepting it. I also think he will accept it because he's not about the money and is a family guy. His family would love to stay in Chicago. In the latest Elias Rankings, Derrek Lee is registered as a Type B free agent. But, that can change on a daily basis. He would also get a nice 1 year contract. If Lee does hit the open market, I think he will get a contract of 2 years, worth anywhere from 15-17M. Derrek Lee has posted a .252avg, 12hr and 51rbi so far this season. He has been improving in recent weeks.

There has also been speculation that 3B Aramis Ramirez or OF Tyler Colvin will move to 1B or the Cubs will sign free agent 1B Carlos Pena. I say no to all 3 options. Ramirez is not an 1B and will struggle at 1B, Colvin is an average+ defender in the OF and Pena is not better then Lee in my opinion, but he's (Pena) younger.

I think there's a 50-50 chance the Cubs sign Dunn in the offseason. If the Cubs do not sign Dunn, I see Lee returning to the Cubs for the 2011 season. So, I think these two are the only options for 1B next year. I would be fine with either one. Dunn will provide the offense, while Lee would provide the defense.

Remember this, the offseason is still long ways away and a lot can change in that time. There's still like four more months left until the offseason starts.

A look at Roster Moves...

Update 4:35: Carlos Silva will be placed on the DL for precautionary reasons and will keep being evaluated. Casey Coleman will take his spot in the rotation. So no player will be sent down, like I have wrote.

Acting manager Alan Trammell said "Silva was never in life threatening condition."

The Cubs roster is currently at 24, with the trade of Theriot and Lilly to the Dodgers. A roster consists of 25 and with the bullpen being overused yesterday; when Carlos Silva left the game early in the 1st. Roster moves are on the way. Cubs beat writer, Carrie Muskat has the latest (2 tweets).

Casey Coleman has been called up from Triple A Iowa and will fill the 25th spot on the roster. No pitcher will be sent down today in a corresponding move. But, tomorrow Thomas Diamond will be called up from Triple A, to take Ted Lilly's spot in the rotation and a pitcher then would have to be sent down. Would it be Coleman or another pitcher being sent down? I have a feeling it could be another pitcher like Russell or Schlitter. I don't think it will be Russell because he's a lefty and I expect Brian Schlitter to be sent down, when Thomas Diamond is officially called up.

Also, there's a possibility SP Carlos Silva will be placed on the 15 day DL with the heart condition. Paul Sullivan chimes in with that possibility. And, Casey Coleman will take his spot in the rotation, not Carlos Zambrano. There's still no word on Silva yet.

Coleman was called up to give a fresh arm in the bullpen. That's the main reason. If Coleman is going to take Silva's spot in the rotation, I would rather see Jay Jackson get the the call to the majors. I want to see what the kid has to offer in the major level.

I guess we will see what happens, with the pitching situation in the next few days.

Carlos Silva Hospitalized...

Cubs starting pitcher, Carlos Silva has been hospitalized with an heart problem. Silva started today's game in Colorado, but was not able to get out of the first inning. He only made one out (0.1 innings) and LHP James Russell came in for him. Silva said, he was having trouble breathing and his heart was racing fast, while he was on the mound.

After he was taken out, the Cubs ruled out he was injured and called it an "illness". The Cubs hooked him up to heart monitors, and discovered he was suffering from PSVT, or an abnormally high heart rhythm.

After the Cubs figure that out, they sent him to the nearest hospital by Coors Field. The good news is, Silva will just be fine. But, he will stay overnight for more observations.

Acting manager Alan Trammell said, "He's staying overnight for observation and we'll go from there". He also said the heart problem caught us "off-guard".

I feel sorry for Silva, as he wants to compete and be out their on his 5th day to pitch. I hope that trend can continue but...if he can't or has to be sent on the DL. I see current relief pitcher Carlos Zambrano, taking his spot in the rotation.

My best wishes goes out to Carlos Silva and hope he will be able to pitch again soon. Only time will tell us and maybe more information will come out tomorrow.

Theriot and Lilly off too LA...

The day of the trade deadline, the Cubs only made one trade. The Cubs ship pitcher Ted Lilly, infielder Ryan Theriot and 2.5M to the Dodgers for infielder Blake DeWitt, pitching prospects Brett Wallach and Kyle Smit. Cubs GM Jim Hendry and Dodgers GM Ned Coletti have been talking about a trade like this for the last couple days and finally got a deal done. At first glance, people may think the Cubs lost...but when you look more into the players, the Cubs won the trade.

Blake DeWitt is an upgrade over Ryan Theriot by a little bit. DeWitt plays better defense and is a better base runner but...he hits for a lower average and has less speed.

The 2 pitching prospects the Cubs also got in the deal, have good minor league stats and could make the Cubs in a year or two. Cubs fans just have to wait and see what they do in the minors.

Bruce Levine stated that Blake DeWitt will be the Cubs starting 2B. But, he's not at Coors Field (Rockies Stadium) and is not in the Cubs lineup today. Mike Fontenot is the starting 2B today.

Like I said above, this was the only Cubs trade today. However, according to Bruce Levine, the Cubs were close to trading IF/OF Xavier Nady and IF Mike Fontenot. But, the trade was not able to be completed. Look for the waiver period, to be an exciting one.

Us Cubs fans, just have to be patient and see what August brings us. Can't wait!

The Rumors Keep Flowing in...

Sorry for not posting an article in a while, but I was out of town. Here's the latest from around the rumor mill, as the deadline is Saturday.

More Ted Lilly updates:
Ed Price is hearing, but has not confirmed the rumor yet, a JA Happ/Ted Lilly trade in the works. However, the Phills do like Lilly a lot, but they do not like him in there ball park. I would be in favor of the Happ trade because Happ is young at the age of 28, a lefty, and can put up good stats. Like I mention above, this could be a real or fake rumor. So, don't hold me against it, if it is an untrue rumor. Right now, I think it's untrue because the Phills don't like Lilly in their ball park. We just have to see what happens over the next few days.

The Dodgers reportedly have the most interest in Lilly, but to get a deal done, they will have to move money around to acquire him. I think if the Dodgers are able to move money around for Lilly, he will be a Dodger come Saturday evening.

Other teams that have interest in Lilly, besides the Phills and the Dodgers, are the Twins and the Mets. It has been reported, about a week ago that Lilly will decline a trade to the Twins as they are on his NTC list. But, that can change in a moment of time. I don't see the Twins or the Mets acquiring him.

Other non-related Lilly rumors:

The Padres and Diamondbacks are interested in trading for Ryan Theriot. We've heard of the Padres interest in Theriot, but the D'backs interest is new. I have seen on the web that the Padres interest in Theriot, is pretty strong. If that's true, Theriot should be a Padre come August first. I don't know why the D'backs are interested in him as they are in last place and he won't help them be a contender. Will Theriot be traded? I'm 50-50 on that, so I really can't tell. It will be interesting though.

Now to the Derrek Lee saga:

Derrek Lee reportedly told general manager Jim Hendry, he will veto a trade to any team and wants to remain a Cub, to end this season and to finish out his career. It has been reported that Lee rejected a trade to the Angels this month. If I'm not mistakin', this is the second time he rejected a trade to the Angels. I think the first time was a year ago or two years ago. The players in the propose trade were not named.

David Kaplan reports the Cubs have received multiple calls on Lee but now those talks have ended. Teams that have express interest in Lee are the Angels, Rangers and Giants. I don't know if I believe Kaplan because he's wrong half the time. But, I will still post it because it's a rumor.

Here's what Lee had to say about not accepting a trade to the Angels.

"Derrek Lee says he "agonized" over decision to decline Angels deal. Says family played big role in decision"

D-Lee: “When the trade was presented to me, I just felt for me and my family the best thing to do was to stay here."

I'm neutral on the news about Lee. Because, I love Lee as a player and his glove at first base. But, I don't like it because the Cubs might of got good prospects in return and it does not look like Lee will return next season.

It's going to be an interesting few days ahead, as the trade deadline is on Saturday. Too bad I have work the next few days and can't keep updated on the rumors. Oh well...

The one player, I'm pretty sure will be traded is pitcher Ted Lilly. My guess: Los Angeles Dodgers.

Quick Lilly Update...

I won't make a big article today but I will write up the latest rumors around the MLB related to the Cubs. Most of the rumors are based around Lilly. Here's the latest:

Ted Lilly to the New York Mets is reportedly on life support. The Mets have cooled on Lilly recently and might not even add a SP at the deadline. A lot of people expect Ted Lilly to be traded to the AL Central. In which the Twins or Tigers will acquire him. They are one and two of who will acquire Lilly. The Cubs had a scout at the Twins/Indians game today but I have no clue why and who he was scouting.

I think if Lilly is traded to the Tigers, Theriot will also be in that trade, going to the Tigers. It would be Lilly and Theriot for prospects. However, I think the Twins will offer more for Lilly as they will be more desperate. It's going to be an interesting week ahead, as I think Lilly will be traded to the Tigers or Twins before his next schedule start. But, I don't now for who.

Pretty much, all the rumors were based on Lilly in the last few days or so. But, much more to come on Lilly and other players on the Cubs.

Update on the Rumor Mill...

With the trade deadline about 2 and a half weeks away, the rumors are once again heating up. Here's the latest from the rumor mill.

According to Bruce Levine, the Tigers and Rockies are interested in trading for 2B/SS Ryan Theriot. Also, the Phillies have had conversations with the Cubs regarding Theriot. We have heard this recently but from what I've read, Theriot could be on his way out soon. My guess is, Theriot will be traded and ship off to the Tigers as they are in the most need of an IF; to stay in playoff contention. Theriot would fit their need as he's cheap, a contact hitter and won't cost near as much in prospects as some other players they could be interested in. I don't see the Rockies acquiring him as Tulo will return soon and there need for him, will drop. Also, I don't think the Phills will acquire him as they have good IF depth, Polanco will return in the next couple of days and Utley will be back in a month or two. Theriot is having, one of his worse seasons of his career and that has drop his stock bit time.

According to Bruce Levine, the Tigers, Mets, Twins and Dodgers are among the teams interested in pitcher Ted Lilly. I do expect one of these four teams to acquire Ted Lilly and my bet is on the Twins now. A week ago, I said the Mets but the Mets are losing interest in Lilly as they might of found a new target. That would be the Astros starting pitcher, Brett Myers who is having a better season and is cheaper but...will cost more is prospects. Out of those four teams, I think the Twins are in the most need of a pitcher and Lilly will fill out their need. I would love the Twins to acquire Lilly, so he can beat the White Sox and stop them from making the playoffs. Before Thursday's night game, Cubs general manager Jim Hendry and Ted Lilly spoke about his future. But, both declined to comment regarding the meeting they had. I think they spoke about, him (Lilly) being traded and signing him back in the offseason. We will never know unless something leaks to the media.

According to George Ofman, Mike Fontenot is drawing interest from the Yankees. If the Yanks do in fact have interest in Fontenot, Jim Hendry should work his hardest to get Fontenot off the books and out of a Cubs uniform. The Cubs will get close to nothing for him, as they will probably get a low level prospect for him and that's it. Fontenot never plays and should be traded, as it will clear bench space and maybe a guy like Bobby Scales can see the majors again. I don't know if Fontenot will be traded to the Yanks but...I hope.

According to George Ofman, the Padres and Rangers have interest in Xavier Nady. We have heard this for weeks now but not from him. Levine reported over the weekend, he will be surprise if Nady is not traded to the Rangers within the next couple days. Well, it has been within a couple of days and he's still in a Cubs uniform. I have an unconfirmed rumor, that says Nady will be traded to the Rangers within a week. I do expect the Rangers to acquire Nady, who are in need of a 1B and the Padres don't exactly need Nady. Nady is another player who does not play enough and does not deserve to sit on the bench for days at a time.

According to George Ofman, Jim Hendry is working on package deals with teams in order to try to trade OF Kosuke Fukudome. I wonder what other players would be involved in the trade with Kosuke. If it's not a lot and you could trade Kosuke with the other players, I would do that in a heat beat. And, by the time July 31st comes, I hope Kosuke Fukudone is gone. Two teams that come to mind, of who could have interest in Kosuke are the Red Sox who need OF with all their injuries and the Padres who need OF as there depth is bad. My gut feeling is, Kosuke will be a Cub come Aug 1st and I don't like the thought of that.

Side Note: According to a report from the Tribune, John Grabow won't be able to return from the disabled list until the end of July. Thank god, I have a little more time before I have to watch him lose more games.

Cashner is like a young Wood...

Cubs top pitching prospect, Andrew Cashner is like Indians closer and long ex Cub Kerry Wood when he was young and new to the big leagues. Cashner shows lots of similarities with Wood when he was young, but also shows some differences as not one person is like another. Here's my reasoning...

The similarities of Andrew Cashner and Kerry Wood have when he was young are... Cashner throws his fastball anywhere from 97-100mph and so did Kerry Wood when he came up from the minors. Also, when a pitcher throws the heat like that, it could bring up wildness in throwing the ball and that is happening for Cashner right now and it happen for Wood about 8-10 years ago. When a pitcher throws the ball that fast, they usually overthrow the ball and miss the strike zone. This can pile up a lot of walks as it has for both players in there careers. Another similarity they both have in common, is they both had Tommy John Surgery in there throwing arm. Finally, the last thing they have in common and that I can think of is both look alike in the face as they both have facial hair that looks exactly the same. However, Cashner shaved his facial hair but if you look close, it's starting to come back.

Then there are the differences in Cashner and a young Wood as no two people are alike. Kerry Wood came up to the majors when he was 21 years old, while Andrew Cashner came up to the majors this year at the age of 23. Kerry Wood came up as a starting pitcher and Cashner came up as a relief pitcher. As a rookie, Kerry was a more complete pitcher than Cashner was as he won rookie of the year, while tying the major league record for most strikeouts in a game as he struck out 20. He is tied with a future Hall of Famer, Roger Clemens. The rookie season is still not over for Cashner but he won't in Rookie of the year as relief pitchers never do and he does not pitch much to make a case for the award. If a Cubs player was going to with Rookie of the Year, it would be either SS Starlin Castro or Tyler Colvin who are having a better year.

Too me, Andrew Cashner looks and reminds me a lot like Kerry Wood. They both looked the same this year before Cashner shaved his face. Does Cashner and Wood remind you of each other? I gave my reasoning, as to why I think they do. Let me hear yours...

The Latest From the Rumor Mill...

With the July 31st trade deadline only 3 weeks away from today, the rumors are starting to be known. Here's the latest from the rumor mill from the last day or so.

According to Bruce Levine, the Texas Rangers are interested in 1B/OF Xavier Nady along with the Los Angeles Angels and the San Diego Padres. It was said yesterday that the Rangers have "strong interest" in Nady after trading there starting 1B Justin Smoak to the Seattle Mariners in the Cliff Lee trade. For now the Rangers called up 1B Chris Davis from Triple A to fill in at 1B for now, but...they do not think he can fill the role at 1B full time. The Rangers like Nady because he can play 1B and is a cheap option as they will only have to pay 1.6 million left on Nady's contract. People think the Rangers will platoon Nady with Davis at 1B if they acquire him. As Nady is a righty and Davis is a lefty. We have heard of the Angels being interested in Nady about 3 weeks ago or so after they lost there starting 1B Kendry Morales to a season-ending leg injury. But the new team that we have have not heard of is the Padres. I think Nady will be there backup 1B, 4th OF and a bench player like he was supposed to be in Chicago. As he won't be starting at 1B for the Padres as they have Gonzo (Adrian Gonzalez) who made the all-star this year and can hit the ball like crazy. I think the Cubs will trade him before the trade deadline and soon, maybe a week. I see the Rangers stepping up there pursuit in the upcoming days and at the end, Nady will be traded to Texas for a mid-low level prospect. This will also help the Cubs in many ways as there payroll will be cut slightly and the OF situation will be eaiser to manage. But the Cubs will have no backup 1B after this trade, what do they do? I say they will call up Brian LaHair from Triple A to take Nady's spot on the roster.

According to Bruce Levine, before Friday's game GM Jim Hendry and Dodgers GM Ned Colletti had a 8-9 minute conversation about trade possibilities. What players could the Dodgers have interest in? Maybe pitcher Ted Lilly, pitcher Tom Gorzelanny and utility man Jeff Baker. As you can tell the Dodgers need pitching and they could of talked about Lilly or Gorzelanny. Also the Dodgers are hurting and might talked about a cheap option like Jeff Baker who can play all the infield positions and LF/RF. I have every indication in my mind Lilly will be traded and maybe soon. I think Gorzelanny will stay as he is only 28 and is also cheap. I don't know Baker will be traded but I do think either Baker or Fontenot will be traded before the 31st. But I do not think the Dodgers will acquire a player from the Cubs as it is all said and done.

Also according to Bruce Levine, the Colorado Rockies have "apparent interest" in 2B Ryan Theriot. This is no surprise to me as there all-star SS Troy Tulowitzki is recovering from an injury but is on fast pace to returning. Before this, the Rockies were rumored to have interest in Theriot when Tulo went down. I do see Theriot being traded before the 31st for a mid level prospect or two but not to the Rockies. Maybe the Tigers or Red Sox. If the Cubs do trade Theriot, I say they will call up Darwin Barney to take his spot on the roster.

According to Buster Olney, the New York Mets have finally put all there efforts into acquiring Cubs pitcher Ted Lilly after there number one choice Cliff Lee was traded. It was actually said the Mets could have more interest in Lilly than Lee because he will cost less in prospects. The Mets like the idea of taking on the 5.55 million left on Lilly's contract and that will result in giving up less players for Lilly. The Cubs and Mets have reportedly started talking trade with both teams throwing names around. One name that has been thrown around is lefty catcher Josh Thole (He is link to his minor league page), this is according to George Ofman of WGN. I'm not a big fan of Thole as he is already 24, has poor stats and the Cubs really don't need a catcher. If the Cubs trade Lilly, I would want a SP and a position player in return, not a catcher. I think it would be smart for the Cubs to trade Lilly as soon as possible as his last two outings were awful. I expect the Cubs do trade Lilly to the Mets sooner rather than later for 2-3 average prospects.

Also according to Buster Olney, OF Kosuke Fukudome stock is falling but the Cubs are still keeping an eye on the market for his service. This does not surprise me at all because he lost his starting job and teams have not seen him play on a regular day basis. The only team that has really shown interest in Kosuke this year was the Red Sox but they wanted the Cubs to pick up the majority of his contract and the Cubs were hesitant to do so. I don't see the Cubs trading Kosuke by the 31st but if they do, I see OF Sam Fuld being called up from Triple A to take his spot on the roster.

These rumors suggest that the Cubs will rebuild and try to trade away as many veterans as possible. We just have to wait and see what the Cubs do as the day is getting closer everyday. This is the day, I always look forward to when the baseball season is at the half way point. Just can't wait for the Cubs to make a move! I say Lilly is the first player traded followed by Nady.

Is DLEE Playing Hurt...

According to Bruce Levine, major league scouts think Cubs first baseman Derrek Lee is playing hurt. Lee has been injured numerous times over the past years but no DL stints beside in 2006 where he broke his wrist going after a ball in the baseline; where a player (Rafael Furcal) ran into his wrist. Other injuries Lee has had in years past counting this year are neck spasms and back problems that did prevent him from playing in some games.

Last year Derrek Lee started the season to a poor start but after the first month he came out of it. He started the same this but still has not found a way to come out of it. Lee has missed games this year with neck and back problems and that could be the result of the long year slump so far.

Let's see what Lee did last year compare to this year so far. On this date July 7th.
2009: Lee was batting .288 with 16hr, 53rbi, 31 walks and struck out 53 times in 264 at-bats.
2010: Lee is batting .230 with 10hr, 36rbi, 43 walks and struck out 78 times in 305 at-bats.

As you can see in 2010, his batting average is way lower, his home runs and rbi's decrease in not as many at-bats. But his walks do go up and so does his K's. So just looking at that, his stats are not helping out the Cubs this season but his defense still does.

Now will this hurt his trade stock? I say yes as his stats won't help any club but his defense sure will. The teams that could use Lee are the Angels but I say if the Cubs trade them a 1B it will be Nady because he is a cheaper option and the other team is the Giants but there GM already said they will not trade for a rental player. Lee would be a rental because he is a FA after the season and I doubt the Giants will re-sign him. When Aug 1st comes, I say Lee will still be on the Cubs and playing 1B. But as of right now, I say the Cubs will not re-sign him after the season but like I've been saying for weeks now, that could change fast.

Cubs Beginning to Sell...(At least Rumors make it sound like that)

The Cubs have not made a trade yet to show that they are beginning to sell but...the rumors are starting to pop up.

The newest rumor is the Cubs will trade starting pitcher Ted Lilly before the July 31st trade deadline and then try to sign or re-sign him in free agency. I am iffy on that because I would like Andrew Cashner and Jay Jackson get a shot to make the rotation as the Cubs will start to rebuild and don't need Lilly as he will keep aging. But I guess if you can sign him to a 1 year contract worth 3 million do it but that's not happening. So if the Cubs trade Lilly, you can say bye bye to Lilly as he won't be a Cub again. Also I would only trade Lilly if you can get a pretty good return for him. Because you can get compensation from him, if the Cubs dare to offer him arbitration which they may not as it will be a good 1 year offer.

Also Gammons said the Cubs are marketing 1B Derrek Lee as he will be a free agent after the year. The only way I can see Lee being traded if the Cubs pay like 3-5 million of his contract and if he will waive his NTC to a California team and the only team I can see is the Angels. But if the Cubs do trade a player to the Angels, I think it will be Nady as he can play 1B and is way cheaper. As of right now I say the Cubs won't re-sign Lee but that can change fast.

Well here comes the best part of July as your team can gain good players or quality prospects. Also the rumors will start coming and I will try to have it here as soon as it is posted but that has been hard lately. Only like 3 more weeks or so to July 31st. Me like all Cubs fans will just have to wait and see what GM Jim Hendry does in the upcoming weeks. What I want him to do is, cut salary, trade veterans and gain good prospects. So I hope he does this which is unlikely as it is Hendry.

What the Cubs Need to do to Make the Playoffs...

Man this is a tough one, as a lot has to happen for the Cubs to make the playoffs and even a push. But here I go...

1) The Cubs need too HIT: This has to be number one on the list as this is the Cubs only major problem. As there pitching has held up this year pretty nicely. Guys like Derrek Lee, Aramis Ramirez and Ryan Theriot have to get back to there 2007 and 2008 form where the offence came together. Lee needs to stop swinging at those high pitches as he can't catch up to them. Ramirez is a little late on his swings and that has to get back to normal but we did see a little of that today against the White Sox. Finally, Theriot, needs to take pitches and more walks. And stop swinging at the first pitch. If these 3 guys get back on track, we might see a late run by the Cubbies.

2) Be more CONSISTENT: This is a major number two as the Cubs have shown some signs of coming out of there funk and then some signs they won't come out. That would go under as a really inconsistent ball club. Like Soto who started off the season great went into a slump and lost playing time to Hill. But as of late, Soto has shown signs of starting to hit the ball and throwing the ball way better when a player tries to steal. With that, Soto got out of Pinella's doghouse and Hill lost playing time again. Another player is Soriano, I know he is a player that goes on hot streaks and no one can stop him but he went cold and fell apart. But he came back to life as he is starting to hit again. Finally the manager Lou Pinella, he needs to pick a leadoff man and stick with him, he needs to try and keep the lineup the same on a regular basis and defintly after a win

3) Colvin and Castro NEED to play everyday: So far, these 2 players have been the bright spots for the Cubs in the 2010 season. When Colvin has played he has produce in any spot in the order. He has speed which the Cubs need and an average defender right now but I see that improving over years. Then Castro, this kid is only 20 years old and so far has only had 2 off days in his major league career and that was last week on back to back days. Castro brings speed, good defense as he can make plays a lot of other guys can't and surprisingly has been patient as he has been taking pitches. That is why I think they should be in the lineup on an everyday basis.

4) Other moves that is spread out and can't be named in a title: Only use relief pitchers John Grabow and Bob Howry when the game is out of reach and if the Cubs are winning by a good amount. Just DL Carlos Zambarno so if the Cubs fail to trade him, the bullpen will not screw up his arm and he can make a return to the rotation with no precautions. If your pitcher is pitching good, relief or starter. leave him in unless he is over 115 pitches or injured.

Trade 1-Cubs/Angels:

Description: I think this trade can work out because the Angels need a 1B and the combo for them right now is not doing to job. Also I think Lee will waive his NTC to the Angels because that is where his family lives. The SS is Dominican and maybe Castro can help him out a little and then pitcher will help add depth.

Trade 2-Cubs/Red Sox:

Description: I think Gorzo is going to be traded as they just put him back in the rotation to showcase him. With Big Z going back to the bullpen. I know Minn will be in the market for SP and not just one. I think there is a good chance they will get a better one like Oswalt or Lee but I think they could use Gorzo to as he is cheap, a lefty and won't cost a lot of players. If the Cubs do trade Gorzo, Cashner can go to the rotation if they keep Zambrano in the bullpen.

Description: The Cubs need to trade OF and get half of Kosuke's contract off the books. Kosuke should be benched and give the starters playing time, Colvin (should be), Soriano and Byrd. I know the Cubs are paying half of his salary but they will have to in any trade. Kosuke would bring the Red Sox a good defender and an occasion good hitter. Kalish looks like he will have a good career but is struggling and the Cubs might be able to get him in the deal.

Description: The Cubs need to trade Lilly as his trade value is pretty good and is a FA after the season. And I don't think the Cubs will re-sign him with the good young arms the Cubs have in the minors. Also Cashner who is in the pen, can go to the rotation. Jenrry will be a good starting pitcher and the other two don't look bad either. I think the Mets will strike out on Oswalt and Lee and then they will switch there attention to Lilly.

In all these trades, the Cubs are cutting budget and getting nice players for the future as the Cubs are starting to rebuild (I hope). Finally, I like these trades too.

Cubs Should Re-Sign DLEE...

I think the Cubs should re-sign Derrek Lee to a 2 year contract with a team option for the third year and NO NTC. I know I am going to get bash for this but there is reasoning to back this up.

Derrek Lee is the quiet captain on the team but also a role model to young kids all over the world. The Cubs can probably sign him cheaper as he wants to finish his career with the Cubs and then retire. I know Lee has been having trouble in the field as of late but he saves so many errors for his infielders. I think the errors he is making, it just a phase and will get out of it soon.

He does have pop in the middle of the order and still takes a good amount of walks. But he is getting up there in age. So would that decrease? More defiantly but I think he would still be a good aspect to the team and winning ball games.

Lee is a fan favorite by most and the Cubs front office. And the most of them all, the Cubs new owner-chairman Tom Ricketts. He has already stated, he would love Lee back.

There is speculation that the Cubs will not re-sign Derrek Lee and go after Carlos Pena who would also be a free agent. Would he be an upgrade over Lee? I don't know and not sure he would be. OK Pena has way more power than Lee. But Pena hits for a low average, not a great defender and does not take a great amount of walks. I know Lee is not hitting for a great average but his past record has shown unlike Pena. He's actually hitting worse that Lee this year. Go figure. Also the Cubs can probably sign Lee cheaper than Pena. Also, then if the Cubs wanted to trade him, he won't have a NTC so it would be easier. (But has as we know Hendry, he would get one. Here is a big BUT, will Hendry be in charge of those negotiations? As the look of it, he won't.)

Who would you rather have Pena or Lee?

Also the Cubs really don't have an in-house solution if Lee left. But there has been talk that 2007 first round pick Josh Vitters will move from 3B to 1B. And if that is the case, this move would give him more time in the minors to develop.

Cubs Should go after Ian Snell...

This is not a rumor or anything but I think the Cubs should do this. Ian Snell was just DFA by the Seattle Mariners today.

I think if the Cubs did in fact trade for him, it would be a low risk high reward situation. He would come cheaper as the M's don't want him. The Cubs do have trade pieces, that they may be able to offer, to acquire him.

I know the Cubs might not want to add older pieces because they want to get younger as you have seen through out the year but Ian Snell is only and almost 29. Where he can still help for years to come as a relief pitcher or starter. The 29 year old righty, has posted a 6.41 era in 46.1 innings pitch during the 2010 season so far. I know that era looks brutal but maybe he can change it over here with pitching coach Larry Rotchchild. Maybe it can be a repeat of an ex M Carlos Silva. Who was brutal in Seattle and is up for the comeback player of the year award with the Cubs.

When 3B Aramis Ramirez comes off the DL, the Cubs will have to trade Jeff Baker, Chad Tracy or Mike Fontenot who are all out of options. And can not be sent to the minors without clearing waivers which I don't think would happen. I say the Cubs trade either Jeff Baker or Chad Tracy for Ian Snell. And I think this helps out both teams and it finally helps solve the Cubs infield problem, of too many.

But with the M's in the AL and the Cubs in the NL, do you think he not get claimed by anyone in in the AL? I say no but with his stats this year, there could be a slight possibility.

I would be in favor of this move because he can pitch out of the bullpen, in the rotation, still young at 29 and maybe Larry will help Snell pitch better like he did with Silva. Maybe the Cubs could win this trade like they did in the winter.

Cashner Should Start...

This is with out doubt and an obvious statement.

Since the Cubs brought up 23 year old Andrew Cashner, he has only pitched perfect. It goes with out mention, he is the Cubs top pitching prospect for a reason. He has reached 99 on his fast with good breaking balls to go with that. But as we all know Pinella, he does not trust his young players and finds does not find time to play them or get them ion the ballgame. So why would Pinella have faith in him and put him in the rotration? I say he wouldn't right now but he needs to. If they want to win more games.

He should switch with Randy Wells who is struggling really bad, while the pitches to batters are getting hit as much as all the Lebron James rumors. Once again, he struggle today and made it harder for the Cubs to win.

So in my mind this is the move you have to do. But right now he is the righy set-up man but you can let Marshall keep that job as he has been pitching amazing.

So wouldn't that be the right move?

Cubs First 3 Picks...

Sorry for the dealys but I have class, work and have not have much time to for the blog. But here is the 3 first picks bu the Cubs and they have been a surprise.

1st round pick, 16th overall: Hayden Simpson. He is a RHP and was from Southern Arkansas University. 21 years old and was a reach in the 1st roud pick.

A lot of people were surprised by the Cubs picking him here because on most draft boards he went in the 3rd-4th at the earliest. But Wilken was hearing he woul not be there at 65thand he took him. Every Cubs fan will hepe he is no not a bust and will pan out.

2nd round pick, 65th overall: Reggie Golden. He is a CF who has the speed and some pop but doe not hit consistently and this could of been a reach in the draft also. He is 18 right now about to turn 19 in a couple months.

Right now he is to young to tell if he will have a good career but it might of been better to draft a player who is older and can tell what kind of career he will had. But I say give him time to mature.

3rd round pick, 97th overall Micah Gibbs. He is a C and is 22 years old. This could be the best draft pick by the Cubs in the draft so far. Keith Law calls it a steal and I hope he is right.

He is already 22 so I think he could be closer to the majors than other guys drafted. I think he will be pretty good. But that is manly hope.

So with the 3 picks, I give the Cubs a C because of Gibbs pick or it would be a D or F. The Cubs just need to sign them and get them on the field so they can keep moving up.

Here's the latest from the Derrek Lee drama lately. All that I write below are from writers sand according to sources.

David Kaplan says that the Cubs and Angles are in serious trade talks about Derrek Lee. And that is according to sources he trusts the most.

Gordon Wittnmymer said the Cubs and Angles are not talking about a trade for Derrek Lee but Xavier Nady.

Carrie Muskat mentions today, that people she has talked to, says the Cubs are not talking trade with the Angels right now. And it is just rumors.

Now for my opinion:

I can't say if the Cubs are or not talking to the Angels about a trade for either Nady or Lee but I can say there has been conversations. The Angels need a 1B and the Cubs have 2 that would come pretty cheap besides Lee is owed 13 million this year. The Angels current 1B Morales who broke his leg is probably out for the season and when he comes back in 2011 he can came right in even what Lee did for them because Lee is a free agent after the year. So both options could be good for the Angels in short term, right? I would think so. But with Lee's contract being the only issue.

As a fan, I love Lee and would miss him if he is traded but this is a move that will help the ball club now and in the future. The Cubs can either call-up the youngsters, play Nady at 1st if not trades, call-up Tracy to play 1st or platoon Nady and Tracy at 1st. We will just have to wait and see if Lee is even traded to the Angels are any team.

Knowing GM Jim Hendry this will not happen because he does not like to trade veterans but maybe his mind will change. Let's just hope.

If I was the GM and Manager...

To start off with, I can probably do a better job than both. But I will start with "if I was the GM". These are moves I would make in weeks and moves I would be working on all the day.

1) Trade Derrek Lee: He is a free agent after the year and is aging. I think right now the Cubs could get decent prospects for him. Trade him to the Angels, they need a 1B badly and Lee probably will fit that need. Seems not a perfect scenario to me. I know Lee has a NTC but he has said before he will waive his NTC to a west coast team. Because that is where his family lives.

2) Trade Kosuke Fukudome: He still has value but Jim Hendry waited to late to trade him. I would of ask the Yankees if they wanted him as they have always have interest in Kosuke even when the Cubs signed him. This is when the Yanks lost Granderson but now Winn and Thames are doing a pretty good job as replacements. Also Kosuke only has a good April and that is it so why is he still on the team. Hendry should know that but he does not get it. This will also open up a spot for 24 year old rookie Tyler Colvin.

3) Trade Ted Lilly: I know this is not an ideal move but the Cubs need to get younger and Lilly is a free agent after the year. He is a lefty that is above average and has pitched great in his last 2 outings. Teams maybe looking for a rental in pitching should look at the Cubs because he won't cost as much as some pitchers do. He is also a lefty which is hard to come by. Also this will open up a roster spot for top pitching prospect Andrew Cashner who should not be in the bullpen.

4) Trade Ryan Theriot: I know this is probably not the best move but he is still kind of young but getting older as the years past. He does hit a lot of singles and multi hit games but he is a below average infielder with OK speed. I would trade him for average prospects.

5) Call-up Darwin Barnery: In corresponding move to trading Theriot. I would call Barney up who is batting .312 for Triple A Iowa this year. He is 24 years old and plays above average defence. He also has above average speed and I think would do a better job than Theriot. I would not insert Fontenot as the starting 2B because to me he is only good as the utility man.

6) DFA John Grabow: First you will have to see if someone will take him off of your hands by putting him us a DFA and see if a team will claim him. But everybody should know that is not going to happen and try to see if he will go to the minors to get some work in. But if that does not work, release and pay his contract. (But if I was the GM in the offseason, I would of signed him but not for the much because he did do pretty good last year).

7) Release Bob Howry: There is no need for him on the team as the Cubs are getting younger and younger players can go to the pen to get work in. (This is another move, if I was the GM, I would of never made). I would just pay his 410,000 get him off the team.

8) Trade Tom Gorzelanny and either Baker or Fontenot for a relief pitcher: The relief pitcher would have to be young as the Cubs would be more of a younger team. The Cubs have so many infielders so one has to go and with the Cubs adding Gorzelanny who has pitch pretty good this year, I think that can happen if you put your mind to it.

9) Shop Ramirez, Zambrano, Silva and Soriano: This is only to get there contracts off the book. But if a team wants the Cubs to pay majority of the contract, I say no then. And don't trade any of them. I think all these players will be on the team when the season comes to an end.

10) Put Aramis Ramirez on DL: He is not helping the ball club and when you have a 29 year old in Triple A who is hitting over .400, bring him up. That is to simple of an answer. So it would be, Call up Chad Tracy. Who is also a pretty good defender.

11) Call up Jackson and Diamond: This will fit 2 needs in the bullpen as both are pitching lights out in Triple A and should be on the ball club now. Scouts has praised Jackson's breaking ball and Diamond is a former first round pick of the Rangers.

12) Call-up LaHair, Fuld, and Snyder to fill Bench: Brian LaHair would be the backup 1B for Nady who will need one as he recovers from arm surgery and will need days off here and there. Sam Fuld will fill as the defensive replacement for Alfonso Soriano in late innings and occasional starts. And Brad Snyder will fill as the Cubs 4th OF who is doing pretty good for Triple A Iowa this year.

This is what I would leave the manager: Starters first, reserves second.
C: Soto, Hill
1B: Nady, LaHair
2B: Barney, Fontenot or Baker
SS: Casstro, Barney, Fontenot (if not traded with Gorzo)
3B: Tracy, Fontenot or Baker
OF: Soriano, Byrd, Colvin, Snyder, Fuld.
SP: Zambrano, Dempster, Wells, Silva, Cashner
RP: Marmol, Marshall, Russell, Diamond, Jackson, Stevens, the relief pitcher the Cubs get for Gorzo and Baker or Fontenot.

I know all this moves won't happen right away if at all but these are moves I would like to make and I think it will help the ball-club now and for the future.

Who Gets Sent Down...

As we all know this by now, the Cubs are going to call-up top pitching prospects Andrew Cashner (top pitching prospect and third best prospect out all Cubs prospects) or Jay Jackson. As of right now, it has to be Andrew Cashner because he was just sent to the bullpen in Triple A Iowa to get ready for this call-up. And Jay Jackson took Cashner's spot in the rotation. So why would you call-up Jackson if he is not in the bullpen and in the starting rotation? They wouldn't, so this is pretty much an obvious choice of who is getting called up on either Monday, Tuesday or Wednesday in Pittsburgh.

According to sources close to the Cubs, Andrew Cashner will be getting the call. As for me, I do not like that move because they wanted Cashner to be a starter and only a stater. But now he is going to the bullpen and I am afraid if they keep switching him from relief to starter it will mess him up. But I hope not. The good thing is, Cashner was the closer for TCU and became a starter and he was good in both roles.

The better question would be, who gets sent down or release-DFA? Right now, if everything goes to plan Tom Gorzelanny will go to the bullpen and then the Cubs will have 4 lefties (Grabow, Marshall, Russell and Gorzelanny) and 3 righties (Marmol, Howry, and Stevens or Cashner). 4 lefties in the pen will be disaster and will not work out. You always need more righties in the pen. That could change plans if they sent Wells to the pen after his crappy outing on Friday (5er, 6 hits and did not even record an out). If that were to happen, no doubt in my mind Stevens will be sent down even when he has pitched pretty good this year so far.

Let's just go with that they send Gorzlennay to the pen. What do they do? I have absolutely no clue and can't wait to see what they do. Gorzelanny and Marshall can't be sent down because they have no options and will have to clear waivers first and that won't happen. Russell has pitched way to good to be send and probably has been the Cubs 3rd best relief pitcher this year. Then it leaves Grabow, I wish the Cubs will just release him or DFA him, he is not helping the Cubs he is and losing way more games than winning. We probably all know, he won't be release he is making to much money (2 years at 7 million) and he is a veteran. But this is the only move that makes sense.

Also could there be a trade on the way? I say no because there is nothing out there.

I can say this, it will be an interesting decision that will be made in the next upcoming days. And only can wait and see.

Trade SP for RP...

As we all know, the Cubs bullpen needs help badly as they are almost in last in relief pitching. They need help outside of Marshall, Marmol and sometimes Russell. But guys like Grabow and Howry are just plain awful this year. Then you have guys like Stevens who have rarely pitched since being called up and Gorzelanny who has not pitched out of the bullpen yet. So it could be "still determined".

If you haven't figure it out yet, the title means "trade starting pitching for relief pitching". The name that sticks out is Tom Gorzelanny who was moved to the bullpen according to reports. This will leave a spot open for Carlos Zambrano was is expected to join the rotation in Pittsburgh next week.

Also according to multiple reports the Cubs will eventually shop Gorzlelanny but are not right now. In these same reports, it says the Cubs will shop Gorzo for relief help. And who wouldn't trade an average relief pitcher for a guy who can pitch as a starter and out of the bullpen. And get the job done no matter where he pitches. His stats are also pretty good this year and can help any team out.

So that is why I think Tom Gorzelany will be the starting pitcher to be traded for relief help if any pitcher is traded. I think Gorzelanny can be traded straight up for an average relief pitcher but maybe if the Cubs add another piece they can get a better relief pitcher. But, however there is like no one available because the baseball season is only in May and from now till the deadline teams can crawl back into contention and fall out of contention. So players might be taken off the trade black and might be added depending on the teams life to make the playoffs.

As of right now I have no clue who is available for the Cubs to go after and who will want Gorzelanny right now. So we will just have to wait and see what happens in the upcoming weeks or months. But I do expect there to be interest in Gorzo and also who the Cubs have interest in.

Other pitchers that could be made available come the trade deadline and could be available now. Those players are Lilly because he is a free agent after the year and if the Cubs won't make the playoffs there is not point to hold onto him if they won't re-sign him after the season. The other player is Carlos Zambrano (aka Big Z) but the two things that might handcuffed the Cubs is his NTC and his untractable contract. I mean he is still young at 28 and I think he has lots of potential left in him. If the Cubs payed majority of his contract, they can get something for Big Z if he waives his NTC. That is what I think.

So will Gorzelanny be traded for relief help? I say yes with all the indications from the media but I don't believe Zambrano or Lilly will be traded.

Over the weekend on either Saturday or Sunday, I will have an article on "Send down Colvin". I know that sounds stupid but I will have backing and why I think that. So don't be like WTF or WTH are you talking about.

Bring up the Youngsters...

To start off with, this probably won't have for 2 years or so because of the veterans and the big contract that no one wants in the MLB. But I thought it would be a good thing to talk about.

Pitchers in the minors that have already been mention to maybe getting the call to the majors are Andrew Cashner, Jay Jackson and Casey Coleman. Whom are all starting pitchers and I don't know if the Cubs want to put them in the bullpen to screw them up with the endurance and stretching them out wrong. That is why they think Jeff Samardzija is not pitching that good anymore because he kept switching from starter to reliever. The reason they will go to the bullpen is the Cubs starting rotation is pitching so good right now, there are veterans besides Randy Wells are are making to much to go the bullpen (don't think about the Zambrano case) Lets look at what the Cubs starting rotation is making (this is counting this year too).

1) Carlos Zambrano is going back to the rotation and I am putting him number 1 for now: He has 4 years left on his contract for 73 million.
2) Ryan Dempster: He has 2 years left with a player option on his contract, he will make 26 million guarantee over the next 2 years with a 14 million player option.
3) Ted Lilly is a free agent after the 2010 season and is making 12 million in 2010.
4) Randy Wells: He is making 427,00 until arbitration.
5) Carlos Silva: He has 2 years left with a mutual option worth 12 million and a 2 million buyout. In the 2 years Silva will make 23 million.

As you can see, it will be hard to trade Zambrano with all that money on his contract and no one really has interest in him. But Chris De Luca said today don't be surprise to see teams call for Zambrano. That shock me a little. I think if the Cubs were to become sellers, Dempster and maybe Silva can be trades without paying any of contract but I think Silva you will have to but Dempster, I say no. If that would be the case, I think the Cubs keep Wells because he is only 27 and still young. Also remember this Zambrano is still young at 28 so he can still help for years.

A look at the youngsters that could get the call for pitching:
1) Jay Jackson: He is 22 years and has posted a record of 3-3 with a era of 1.99 for Iowa Cubs.
2) Andrew Cashner: He won Triple A player of the week posting a 3-0 record with a 0.95 era. Cashner is 23 years old and since he has been in Triple A, he has posted the above stats.
3) Casey Coleman: He is 22 years old and has posted a 5-3 record with a 3.36 era for the Iowas Cubs.

So if the Cubs were to put these 3 in the bullpen, there bullpen might actyallu be good and the Cubs will win lots more games. The Cubs can release Grabow and Howry and send down Jeff Stevens. But we all know the Cubs won't release Grabow because of what he is making. Another mistake by Jim Hendry by not giving the youngsters time to shine. Going into the season the Cubs were going to have problems with the bullpen because of age but with theses moves the bullpen gets younger. The ages in the bullpen would be, 28 (Marmol), 27 (Marshall), 27 (Russell), 27 (Gorzelanny), 23 (Cashner), 22 (Coleman) and 22 (Jackson). That is young but if they can throw strikes and get outs, age does not matter. The only question remains, will the Cubs put these pitchers in the bullpen when the are starters? I have to say yes because they won't get a chance at the starting rotation for at least 2 years because of the contracts in the rotation.

Young players that are not pitchers that could make the team is a tear or so:
3B Josh Vitters: He is currently playing for Double A and is making progress after a wrist-hand injury last year. There has been speculation that he could move over to 1B when Derrek Lee leaves whenever that time comes. At this point, the Cubs do not have a 1B prospect close to the majors and lee is in last year of his contract. But I doubt he leaves and the Cubs will be OK for now.
OF Brett Jackson: He has put up OK numbers in the minors but does give you another player who can leadoff with his speed and plays good defence. He also has a good eye and has been improving.
SS Darwin Barney: Can he move over from SS to 3B like what Alex Rodriguez did? I wish he could so the Cubs can move Vitters to 1B and keep Castro at SS. We will just have to wait and see what the Cubs do with all there top prospects as middle infielders.
SS Hak-Ju-Lee: If he does make the major leagues, he will most likely move over to 2B and be Castro's double play partner. But as of right now he is not hitting but still young. He is only in Low Single A, Peoria Chiefs.

I think all these players besides Barney will be a September call-up in the 201ii seasons. I think Barney will be a September call-up this season. Barney is tearing up Triple A pretty much.

By this time the Cubs will have a new manager (Ryne Sandberg) who I think will be open to playing young players and I think the Cubs will have a new GM (Greg Maddux) that is going to build around younger players and the farm system. We all know, if the Cubs don't make the playoff this year Pinella and Hendry will be gone and is probably best for the organinzation.

Now to get to me, I would love the Cubs to be young and I am probably not the only one to agree with that statement. The Cubs farm system is improving every year and made a big jump going into the 2010 season. If that is the case, this could work and they could be a good team for years to come. And win lots of WORLD SERIES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

What to do with Grabow...

As everybody knows. relief pitcher John Grabow has look awful so far this season. It seems like he is throwing a beach ball to home plate because he is getting hit so easily and giving up a run in every game he pitches. The run usually comes after he walks a batter which occurs every game also.

John Grabow came over in the trade with the Pittsburgh Pirates on July 30th of last year. He came over with current 5th starter Tom Gorzellany. Last year he was pretty good, better than Gorzelanny but this year Gorzelanny has out match him by a long shot.

Stats with the Cubs:
In 2009: He pitched 72.1 innings giving up 27 earned runs and 40 walks while posting a 3.36era.
In 2010: He pitched 16 innings giving up 15 earned runs and 10 walks while posting a 8.44era.

So looking at the stats from this year to last year he is giving up a run a inning but he still walks a lot of batters.

Going into the season, Grabow was expected be the lefty 8th inning guy along with Angel Guzman and Esmalin Caridad (who are both on the DL). Now lefty Sean Marshall is the 8th inning guy along with Carlos Zambrano (kind of but not for long).

Starting on opening day, Grabow was the only pitcher in his 30's to be in the bullpen and Pinella will have faith in him because he is a veteran but that has not been the case. Pinella has lost faith in him every outing he makes and now will not come into a lot of close games.

Did the Cubs sign Bob Howry to take his spot? I don't think they did, I think they wanted a cheaper upgrade that wouldn't cost much (signed him for 410,000) and another veteran in the bullpen. Will he do better than Grabow? He can't do worse and I say he does and surprise all Cubs fans. That could be hope but who knows.

Will the Cubs DFA or release RP John Grabow? There is no way! The Cubs will not release him because he has 7 million left his contract and he is a veteran. If the Cubs did DFA him, no one will claim him because of his 2 years 7 million contract.

Verdict: Like I said, there is no way he is going to be release so if that is the case I would put him in blowout games for either side and see if he can get back to pitching perfect 1 innings. If he does that, pith him in more important games and go like that. But I do think there is a chance Howry will take over the spot he has pitch all season besides Grabow being a lefty specialist.

I guess we should just wait and see how he pitches in the next upcoming weeks. I hope for the best because the Cubs need him in the weak bullpen.

According to David Kaplan, the Cubs have reach an agreement with relief pitcher Bob Howry for the minimum salary. Bob Howry was just released by the Arizona Diamondbacks last week. Kaplan says it is a "done deal" according to people close to Howry.

Howry played for the Cubs 2 seasons and that was 2 years ago. But since leaving Chicago, Howry has pitch horrible and the Cubs will hope that will change. The Cubs need a veteran in the bullpen and he is a cheap option. Will he help? The Cubs organization and Cubs fans will hope. He is expected to be at Wrigley on Friday when the Cubs play the Texas Rangers.

So who gets sent down? I say recent call-up Jeff Stevens. But that can change on how Berg or Russell pitches in the next few days. Also how Stevens pitches too.

Also on that note, the reason Stevens got called-up is because the Cubs put Esmanlin Caridad back on the 15 day DL with inflammation in his throwing arm.

So we just have to wait and see how he produces back in a Chicago uniform.

Is D-Lee Being Shoped...

As the Cubs continue to struggle, will they try and unload there all-star 1B Derek Lee. Well according to Nick Cafardo of the Boston Globe, the Cubs are willing to trade Lee. That is according to MLB executives. This is also coming out of Boston where the Red Sox have been looking for a 1B for the last year or so. With trades falling for Padres 1B Adrian Gonzalez (Gonzo) and Brewers 1B Price Fielder. Now could they have interest in Cubs 1B Derrek Lee? As of right now, I say no because Lee has been struggling and I highly doubt they want to take on the 13 million left on his contract. When they are pretty much not in contention right now but that can change in the next month. When the deadline gets closer.

If I was GM Jim Hendry and the Cubs organization, I would wait on a trade because he is starting to get out of his hitting funk, he is a good clubhouse guy, a gold glove 1B and right now, the won't get much in return.

Hold ups that could hurt a trade for Derrek Lee is that he has a no trade cause and he said he wants to end his career in Chicago. And may not waiver his cause to another team. Also new owner-chairman Tom Ricketts loves Derrek Lee as a player and as a guy and probably does not want Lee to leave. But sign an extension to end his career in Chicago.

Also if Lee is traded, who plays 1B. It would be Xavier Nady but he is not an upgrade over Lee and a big down grade. They also don't have a good 1B prospect in the minors. Unless the speculation of 3B Josh Vitters will move to 1B. That is it then.

Member this, the Cubs are only 5.5 games back of first place and one win streak can put the Cubs in first or close. And I can see that happening soon.

So do you think the Cubs will trade Lee anytime soon or before the deadline? I say no because of the above reasons. Also I won't be happy because he is my favorite Cub but if he did get traded, I would switch my attention to 20 year old SS Starlin Castro as my favorite Cub.

Really Theriot...

To start off with, I am not a Theriot hater but he is starting to bug me with his at-bats. I know over the past week, I want Castro to become the leadoff man. But people and the Cubs coaching staff thinks he is to young and to much of an aggressive swinger. But what is Theriot doing now that Castro wouldn't do?

During yesterdays game in back-to-back at-bats Ryan Theriot swung at the first pitch on both at-bats and hits a soft grounder to one of the infielders. He really has no speed to beat those outs and there goes 1 out on the scoreboard.

A leadoff man is suppose to take pitches for the batters after you to see what the pitcher is throwing and make contact with the ball. Like today with a man on third base with 1 out, Theriot strikes out and that pretty much put the game away.

So what would Castro do different? To me a lot, he is actually taking pitches and walks. Now with the Cubs not winning, why won't you switch Castro to the leadoff spot and Theriot to the 8th spot? I can say this, I would make that move in a heart beat but I would of done it a week ago.

Since Theriot switch positions from shortstop to second base, he has hit for a low average and has had a hard time getting on base. So could that be why he is not hitting? As I can see it, that would be my guess but who knows. Maybe he will start getting on base way more and this move does not have to happen but right now it does.

Will this move happen soon or ever? Only time will tell!

The Lineup, I would like the See...

This is the lineup I would like to see now or maybe down the road. With inexperience players in the places that they may not be ready for. I will have the number in the batting order and why I think they should bat right there. It will go in order, 1-8.

1) SS Startlin Castro: A lot of people may think he is to young and is too much of an aggressive swinger but could this be the shakeup in the Cubs lineup? He gets a piece of the ball almost every time, has speed and can out beat infield singles. Too me, he has everything in a leadoff man and I would like to see him in the one hole. It doesn't hurt to try. Maybe with him being in the one hole, he will take more pitches and more walks with the help of Rudy. I don't see this move happening now but I do see it happening sometime this season.

2) RF Kosuke Fukudome: I think this is the ideal position in the order. He usually gets contact with the ball and if the number 1 hitter can get on base. He can lay down a bunt or get the guy to 2nd. Also he's a good hit in run candidate. As of right now, he is getting on base with a .300 average and takes walks like a 2 hitter should.

3) CF Marlon Byrd: He has hit anywhere from 1st-6th in the order. I think the 3 hole is a good spot for him because he is getting on base regularly and has average power like a 3 hitter does. He also runs good for a big guy and one hell of a baserunner. A way better addition than Bradley, well duh. He is hitting in the 3 hole right now and should just leave it alone for now.

4) 1B Derrek Lee: He is definitely not a clean up hitter because he does not have a lot of power or he is not showing it this year like he did last year. But when Pinella move him the the 4 hole, he started to hit. 2 doubles on Tuesday and 2 singles on Wednesday. If a guy is hitting the ball why change him in the order that is just dumb. But if he starts not to hit, switch him with Byrd.

5) 3B Aramis Ramirez: I know you are probably like NO, not hitting, should be 8th or something but he does have power and on one swing he can hit the ball over the wall in the outfield. Over the last week or so he has hit the ball with more authority and has had better at-bats. Batting 5th could jump start him and get back to his old form.

6) LF Alfonso Soriano: This is the most obvious choice in the lineup. He has been the 6th hitter pretty much all season and has exceed in this spot. When he was move to the 5 hole, he struck out 2 times, swung at those sliders and went 0-4. So he should stay right here and he will be good. He will stay here too.

7) C Geovany Soto: He probably should be higher in the order but the last couple games, he has not look so great like earlier in the season. But I think he will be fine and keep hitting the ball like he is right now. I think he could move up to the 5 hole if Ramirez keeps struggling and Ramirez would move to the 7 hole but that is still weeks away if that would to happen.

8) 2B Ryan Theriot: Too me this is the best spot in the order for him, he is leading the league in singles. He can get a hit and then the pitcher lays down a bunt. Then you have a guy at 2nd for the beginning of the lineup. He also exceeds here better than any other number in the order.

Like I said above, this will not happen right away but I can see this at least one time this season.

Castro Should Be...

Castro should be the Cubs leadoff man. I think a lot of Cubs fans will agree with me but here is why I think this move should happen.

Castro has speed and should be the Cubs leadoff man because he is the only one on the team that has that kind of speed.

He is a contact hitter that usually will get a piece on the ball and does not strike out a lot.

He can beat out infield hits like he did today and yesterday.

If he gets on to the start the game, he can steal and get into scoring position for the heart of the order.

I think this move can jump start the offence and win more games. Then the NL Central will be the Cubs once again. YAY!

Thoughts on if that would be a good move and by what I said as reasons?

Tommorow I will have what I think the Cubs starting lineup should be.

Will Mike Fontenot be Traded...

The question that keeps popping up in every Cubs fan mind is, will Mike Fontenot be traded. Mike Fontenot was recently benched for 20 year old SS Starlin Castro who was called up on Friday to be the Cubs everyday SS. With that move, the Cubs moved Ryan Theriot to 2B to take over Fontenot's job. Now Foentenot will be used in the pinch hitter role and the utility role.

According to multiple reports, Fontenot was not happy with the benching and could of ask his agent to demand a trade but that is not known. I think he didn't but no one will know. Fontenot was not even hitting that bad but they need a change and this was the obvious move in Jim Hendry's eyes.

Also another person who has not been mention yet and lost more playing time than Fontenot is Jeff Baker. Baker was used in the utility before the Castro call-up but now is the backup 3B and the backup utility. There is no need for both on the team and one needs to go so the Cubs can call Tracy up. The Cubs can't send down Baker or Fontenot because they are out of options. If they did want to send one of them down, they will have to pass through waivers and I don't expect either of them to pass waivers. They are both good players to have in the utility role and could be a valuable asset to the bench of pretty much every team.

I can imagine that both are being shop and not just one. I think the Cubs will either get a player to be named later or cash considerations in a trade for either Baker or Fontenot.

Let's break it down: Fontenot or Baker. How they can help in different ways.

Mike Fontenot: He is a lefty off the bench and that is always good to have. And 2 years ago before being named starter, he was good in the utility role and I think this is the best spot for him.

Jeff Baker: He can play 1B, 2B, 3B, RF and LF. And probably SS and CF if he was ask too. He is also younger than Fontenot and brings a better attitude in my opinion.

I think Baker would be the one to be traded because Theriot was Fontenot's LSU Tiger team mate and they wouldn't want to spit them up and Fontenot is a lefty. But If I had to chose one, I pick Baker because he is younger, entering his prime and has more versatility than Fontenot.

Also when one of them are traded, Chad Tracy will be called up to be Ramirez's backup again. And that is the right move in my mind.

What's with Grabow...

In unexpected moves, relief pitcher John Grabow was sent to Chicago for an MRI in his knee but results were negative.

When Grabow pitch 2 days ago, everything look good besides his pitching which was just awful. Is this a move the Cubs just made up so he can be pushed to go on the DL because he is not pitching great? I think it could be and this is how they are going to do it.

If Grabow does go on the DL, I would like to see Cahner come up and see what he does against major league pitching. But if you look at the stats in Triple A, it will be either Casey Coleman or Thomas Diamond. With my pick going to Diamond. I thought he pitch good enough to make it out of spring training and I think he will be the right choice.

Let's just see what happens with Grabow down the road.

Esmalin Caridad Activated...

Relief pitcher Esmalin Caridad has been activated off the 15 day DL and pitcher Jeff Gray was optioned to Triple A. This was move that was going to come either today and tomorrow and Gray was the obvious choice to get sent down. He has not pitch well.

If Caridad can throw strikes, her can be effective. He has a good fastball. It is weird because he only walk 1 batter all spring training and when the season started he couldn't find the strike zone. Lets hope he goes back to spring training form.

Side Note: More Castro as he os batting 8th again. Well this will happen a lot as he is the Cubs starting SS for the rest of the season.

Lets see what happens with Caridad and Castro down the road.

Starlin Castro to the Show...

Finally! This is probably a delayed move but the Cubs called up 20 year old SS Starlin Castro from Double A. The Cubs will move Ryan Theriot to 2B. In responding move to the call-up, the Cubs sent down Chad Tracy.

The reason I think Tracy was sent down is Mike Fontenot and Jeff Baker are out of options. And until they can trade one of them, Tracy will be in the minors. I would rather keep Baker but lets see what Hendry does. I think one of them will be traded shortly.

I love this move, I wanted to see him out of spring training but needed more time in the minors. He is a way better defender than Theriot at SS and will hit arong what Theriot hits or even better. Castro is in today's lineup batting 8th and so is Theriot playing 2B and batting 1st.

In other moves, the Cubs promoted top pitching prospect Andrew Cashner to Triple A and 2nd best prospect Josh Vitters to Double A. Good to see this!

Lets see what happens tonight against the Reds.

What to do with Pinella..

After yesterdays lost vs the Pirates in back-to-back days, I started to think of "what to do with Pinella". In the game yesterday, I question some of Pinella moves that could of cost the Cubs the game. Here is what I don't like about Pinella right now and why I think it is time for a change:

1) Why would you move Alfonso Soriano from the 6th spot to the 5th spot when he is red hot. And in today's game, Soriano strikes out 2 times and swung at pitches he has not been swinging at. I did not like the move before or after the game. I think Soriano has to be moved back to the 6th spot.

2) The pinch-hitter for the pitcher. When Pinella used Tracy as the pinch-hitter, I was like "why" when you have Colvin, Nady. Baker, and Soto. I thought it would and should of been Colvin because he can get on base, he has speed and power. My ranking of who to use in that spot was: Colvin, Nady, Baker, Tracy and Soto (just because he was the back-up catcher).

3) Some moves that he makes through out the season and I don't like. He does the lefty-lefty match up and the righty-righty match up. Like what example is, Marshall is pitching great but a righty comes up and he takes him out and the next batter hits the pitcher hard.

Reviewing: If the Cubs keep playing like this, Pinella will be gone eventually. If that happens, I give it around a month. And the Cubs call up Ryne Sandberg to be there new manager.

In my own opinion, I think the Cubs need a new voice in the locker room and a coach with more fire in him. Also a new coach with new moves on they way to set up the team. It looks like to me, that Pinella does not care anymore.

I guess time will only tell.

Could Ramirez Move down to the 6th Hole...

After yesterdays lost vs. the Pirates Lou hinted that with the early struggles with 3B Aramis Ramirez. He could move him down in the batting order.

Pinella wants to keep him in the lineup because he can produce and as his career has shown he always starts off show to the season. Can this be another season? I sure hop so.

I just have 1 question, why would you move Ramirez down to 6th and Soriano to 5th I would imagine? Fonzy is one of the hottest hitters in baseball and from what I know, if a player is hot. Keep everything the same, that counts where he bats in the order.

Since this was yesterday and Pinella had time to sleep over it, lets see what he does for the game tonight.

Esmalin Caridad Rehab's Start Tonight...

As I reported on my blog last week, relief pitcher Esmalin Caridad is expected to have a rehab start tonight for Iowa Cubs and if everything goes well he could be activated from the DL next week sometime.

He was pitching in Arizona for extended spring training but only pitch 1.1 innings giving up just 2 walks. His fastball has been good but can't find the strike zone anymore like he did in spring training.

I think he will be activated next week and Jeff Gray will be sent down.

If he does pitch today and I have time, I will have an update of what and how he did.

Positives and Negatives from April...

As every month, there are good things but there bad things too in a month.

Positives:
1) Alfonso Soriano and Geovany Soto got back to there 2008 forms and not 2009. But there is tons of baseball left.
2) Marlon Byrd and Ryan Theriot are tied for the major league with most multi-hit games. This is pretty awesome!
3) The weakest part going into the season was expected to be the starting rotation but they have been top in the league for most of the month and most of the stats.

Negatives:
1) Derrek Lee and Aramis Ramirez have had a slow months. But in Lee's defence,he is starting to get hits. On the other hand, Ramirez is getting closer but still far away. Maybe a new month will turn him around.
2)The bullpen has had there struggles but with Big Z to the mix, there era has dropbig times. But 3 pitchers can't be all (Marshall, Zambrano and Marmol). Let's see how they do and if they add a piece,
3) Not that great of a month, the Cubs finish at 500 but were improving at the later part of a month. Expect a better month that April and a run for 1st place.

I will have the same thing for May also when the time comes.

What to do with ARAM...

As every true Cubs fan should know is that 3B Aramis Ramirez is struggling really bad. Ideas that may help him get out of his funk:

Reasons I think he is struggling right now, he missed over half the season last year and he missed half of spring training. These should not be excuses when you are 20+ games into the regular season. But as I can see, his timing just looks a little off. He also keeps pulling his head and not looking the ball all the way into his bat.

Ideas to maybe start him hitting:

1) You can bench him for 3-4 days and play Tracy during that time. Then Ramirez and Rudy can get to the batting cage or to the field early to starting working on him trying to get back to old Ramirez form.

2) You can put him on the 15 DL and play Tracy and/or during that time. This can help him in 2 reasons; 1) Maybe get his head mentally straight forward, 2) He can go on a rehab outing and try and hit against live pitching. In Triple A where the pitchers there can be close to the majors or got sent down from the majors.

3) My last idea, just keep playing him and hope he starts hitting. There have been signs of him starting to hit the ball hard but he is still striking out an unusual tons of times.

What should Lou and even Hendry do, any of these ideas or will they have something of there own up there sleeve?

Lets see what happens with Ramirez today or after the off day. Maybe the off day on Monday will help. Hopefully!

It has been really slow on the Cubs front and don't know what else to type about but here are some Cub news:

The Cubs are giving pitcher Carlos Silva extra rest because of a sore wrist. After the off say, Dempster will pitch on Tuesday, Lilly on Wednesday, Wells on Thursday, Gorzelanny on Friday and then Silva on Saturday. Not really a big deal.

P Esmalin Caridad will pitch for Iowa on Tuesday and if everything goes well he will come off the DL next week and go back to the pen. Either Russell, Berg or Gray gets sent down. I say Gray.

That is it for now. Tomorrow I will have "What to do with ARAM".

Castro Could be to the Majors Soon...

Bruce Levine chimes in with a interesting story. He said top prospect Starlin Castro shortstop could be on his way to the show soon.

According to him, the Cubs have been keeping a daily tab on him in Double A. Randy Bush is with the Smokies right now keeping an eye on him and giving GM Jim Hendry daily reports on how he is doing. They will decide (Hendry and Bush) when to sit down with Cubs management to talk about the call-up for Starlin Castro.

If Castro does get the call, the Cubs will move Theriot to 2B and insert Castro in at SS. That leaves Jeff Baker, Mike Fontenot and Chad Tracy as one to be traded. Everybody thinks Fontenot is the odd man out. I would say he should be because of his age compare to Baker and Tracy is cheaper.

Levine also mentions Castro could stop at Triple A to get a littler more work in but won't be there for long.

I just can't wait to see this kid come up and play. The Cubs will also finally have a true leadoff man.

I guess time will only tell!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Update on 2 Cubs Top Prospects...

I will have the Cubs top pitching prospect and hitting prospect. Both are playing in Double A and are playing lights out ball:

Hitting Prospect Starlin Castro:

In 72 at-bats Castro is hitting .361 with 1hr, 16rbi and 4 stolen bases. Castro is in a little slump going 0-11 in his last at-bats but slumps happen to every ball player in the majors and minors. I still think they have to call him up but with Theriot getting a base a lot lately and Fontenot and Baker playing a good platoon role. He has not spot on the team so now he will stay in the minors for a littler longer than expected.

Pitching Prospect Andrew Cashner:

There was a report out there earlier that the Cubs could call him but that was shot down by Pinella and Hendry, saying "he is not ready". Cashner is 1-1 with a 3.33 era in 24.1 innings pitch. He has been used in the starting role in the minors but the Cubs see him as a relief pitch (closer or set-up man). He has the stuff to be a relief pitcher and could be a dominate one as well. So should the Cubs bring him up as the set-up man? I am, one that does not know but would like Zambrano to go back to the starting rotation.

Bruce Levine said that it might not be long for either of them to get the call to come to the majors and I can't disagree anymore.

Only time will tell.

Recap of Yesterdays Game...

The only reason I am doing this is because I was there. As you already know, the Cubs killed by beating Milwaukee 12-2.

Things that I saw when I was there and what was good or bad:

1) I know Ramirez is struggling with the average but is hitting the ball with more authority.

2) The Cubs need to find more playing time for the youngster Colvin.

3) How can you call up Castro when all your players are hitting. Like Theriot who went 5-6.

4) I know Wells did not walk anybody but his command was shaky at best.

5) Kosuke's cleat got stuck in the sand down the right field line. That is where I sat, right by the railing so I could see.

6) The Cubs can hit the ball hard, far and hit a lot when they are in a grove at the plate.

I will do one more of these when I go to the Cubs game at Wrigley on July 4th when they face the Reds.

Lilly Activated...

Finally, Ted Lilly is making season debut today against the Brewers. Well he is out of the game right now. Line for today: 6 innings, 3 hits, 0 runs and a couple walks. If you saw the game, you can tell he was rusty with his command.

The best part of the day was the player who got sent down. With no surprise, Jeff Samardzija got sent down. I am so pump, he deserves to get sent down. He should go back and play football. So that 5 year 10 million deal the Cubs gave him is pretty much wasting in the minors. Another bone head move by Hendry.

Pretty much Big Z took his spot in the pen and he will do better no doubt. He can't do worse.

I guess time will only tell.

Football Game Coming to Wrigley...

Yes there is a football game coming to Wrigley but a college football game. Northwestern vs. Illinois. I think the game in November 20 or 21.

2 years ago, Wrigley Field hosted the Winter Classic (Blackhawks vs. Red Wings) and now this.

I can tell you one thing, Wrigley Field will need new sod after that. With possibly snow on the ground and the wet conditions.

The good thing is, Wrigley use to be the home for the Bears so they know how to play there then. Because the dimensions would make it hard.

I am one person who would love to see the game on the date and can't wait for it.

I guess we just wait and see how everything plays out.

Big Z to Bullpen...

Yes that is right, Cubs ace Carlos Zambrano will go into the bullpen come Friday. He will be the Cubs 8th inning guy-set-up. Since the bullpen sucks and everybody knows that, this was a move that had to me made, Lou said.

Other statements Lou said. "This is a significant move not a panic move" "He got's nasty stuff and Z is fine with it" He said more statements but I can't recall them. Also this statements might not be right on the head but close to it.

My thoughts on the move: I am fine with it for now but won't like it if it was full-time. It is good for a temporary purpose until they can trade for a relief pitcher-8th inning guy.

What to do with Samasrdzija...

Where should I start? Ummmmmmm I know, how bout this, HE SUCKS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

He should not be in the majors and should be in the minors or unemployed. He should go back to football where he was actually good. When he comes in, he either walks the batter or gives up a hit. To me he only has a fastball that he throws right down the plate or high over the player. And the batters eyes light up and then they kill the ball.

He came in the games yesterday and just need to get 1 out but he walks the first batter, gives up a stolen base and then a double where the runner scores. Then he gets taken out.

If they still play him, maybe they will call me to come into the game. I can't do any worse than him, only better.

Like I stated before, he should be sent down when pitcher Ted Lilly returns from the DL on April 24th.

I guess we should just wait until Aprile 24th then to see if he gets sent down.

My Thoughts on Lefty Lineup...

As you already know, Lou Pinella change the lineup against lefties. If you missed it, here is the lineup:

1) CF Marlon Byrd
2) 2B Jeff Baker
3) 1B Derrek Lee
4) RF Xavier Nady
5) 3B Aramis Ramirez
6) LF Alfonso Soriano
7) C Geovany Soto
8) SS Ryan Theriot
9) P Pitcher

My thoughts:

1) Marlon Byrd is not your ideal #1 hitter but he is hitting the ball lately so this could be a good way to jump start the offence. Theriot was not getting on base lately. The ideal move would be to call up top prospect Starlin Castro who is hitting .357 for Double A this year.

2) I actually like the move to bring Baker up to the 2 hole.

3) You have to keep Lee in the 3 hole. To easy.

4) Maybe with Ramirez getting moved down to the 5 hole. It will help him start hitting and maybe Nady will show power in the 4 hole.

5) Soriano should stay. Best position in the lineup for him.

7) Soto is hitting the ball and deserves to move up in the lineup.

8) I think the 8 hole is the best poition for Theriot. He can get a hit and then the pitcher puts down a sacrafice bunt.

Those are my thoughts on the new lineup. Lets see what happens in todays game vs. the Mets.

Lilly Set to Return...

According to Bruce Levine P Ted Lilly is set to return on April 24th in Milwaukee. He will have his last rehab start tommorrow and if everything goes well, that will be the date he comes back.

Lilly is recovering from offseason knee surgery and has been on the DL since the season open.

Now the questions for Pinella are, who gets sent down and who goes to the bullpen?

I will take my guesses, Jeff Samardzija gest sent down (he better get sent down) and Gorzelanny goes to the bullpen.

Here is why I say that, Samardzija can't thow srikes and when he does. It is right over the plate and easy to hit. Sillva has outmatch Gorzelanny and deserves to stay in the bullpen.

I guess we just have to wait and see.

P Rich Harden is 0-0 with a 2.79era in 9.2 innings but has walk 8.

RP Aaron Heilman is 0-0 with a 3.18era in 5.2 innings.

U Jake Fox is batting .111 with 1hr and 3rbi in 18 at-bats.

RP Kevin Gregg is 0-0 with a 0era in 4.1 innings.

OF Milton Bradley is batting .147 with 2hr and 8rbi in 34 at-bats.

2B Aaron Miles who was traded in the offseason was move aroung 2 times and was eventually release by the Reds. He is still a free agent.

As you can see all the players the Cubs lost so far aren't a big deal right now but is still early. I will have updated all season long on ex Cubs.

Will Starlin Castro get Called up in 2010...

Every Cubs fan and even me wants to know, will top prospect SS Starlin Castro get the call to come to the majors this year?

Right now Castro is playing for Double A and is batting .356 with 1hr and 7rbi. He is 10-28 in the early season. He also gots 4 stolen bases. If a guys hits like that for some time, lets say a month. Can you still keep him down in the minor league? I say that is not fair for Castro and he should get the call up.

I think he will not be moved up to Triple A Iowa before being called up for the Cubs because they want to give the time to Darwin Barney in Triple A. It will be a Tyler Colvin move where he has still yet to play in Triple A but right now he is in the majors.

I think he gets called up a little bit before the all star game or a little after the all-star game. Or if a starter gets injured Mike Fontenot or Ryan Theriot. I also think either Mike Fontenot or Jeff Baker will be traded to make room for him to get the call.

Even though Mike Fontenot and Ryan Theriot are hitting the ball, his defence can win like 5 more games than what Theriot gives the Cubs. So that will help them make a run to go back to the postseason.

If he is not called up before September, he will be at least be a September call-up but to me that is to late.

So when will he get the call? We just have to wait and see.

What to do with the Cubs OF Situation...

There has been a lot of questions of how the rotation is going to be in the Cubs outfield. While Soriano is only playing like 6 innings now, Tyler Colvin is coming in for Soriano and will Nady take an outfielder spot.

The outfielders on the roster are Alfonso Soriano, Marlon Byrd, Kosuke Fukudome, Xavier Nady and Tyler Colvin.

This is what I would do:

I would bench Soriano for a couple days and give him time to get his head in tone and take more batting practice. Then start him with like 3 days off and see what he does. If he does not produce bench him but if he hits keep playing him. But still take him out in the 6th or 7th as a defencive replacement. Jim Hendry should be shopping him and trying to get something in return which will take forever.

When Soriano is off, I would play Xavier Nady in LF. This might be a surprising move but I would send Tyler Colvin down to Triple A and recall Sam Fuld from Triple A. Here is why I would do that, I think Colvin needs to play everyday and not be a defensive replacement for either Soriano or Nady. Sam Fuld is also a better defender than Colvin.

If I had to send a outfield out tomorrow, it will be Nady in LF, Byrd in CF and Fukudome in RF. With Soriano and Fuld on the bench.

That is how my outfield rotation would go.

What will the Cubs do in the 8th Inning...

In 7 games so far, the Cubs are 3-4. In the 4 losses they have, 3 have come in the 8th inning of the game. So how will the 8th inning go now?

Going into the season, the 8th inning was going to be righty Esmalin Caridad and lefty John Grabow. But those 2 lost the 3 games in the 8th. 2 for Grabow and 1 for Caridad.

Yesterday Jeff Samardzija cam in the 8th and pitch a 1-2-3 inning but I hope he is not it. Pinella did say lefties James Russell and Sean Marshall will come in down the stretch in late innings. Marshall has been pitching lights out and Russell has pitch good so far in his rookie season.

But when Ted Lilly returns (his date is now set for April 24th at Milwaukee) who will get sent down. Justin Berg, James Russell, Jeff Samardzija or Esmalin Caridad. In my opinion, I say the 2 that should stay up are Russell and Caridad. I have faith in Caridad because he only walk 1 batter all spring training and I think he will come around. And Russell because he has done nothing so far to get sent down. So who will it be Jeff Samardzija or Justin Berg (my choices). I say the decision will come down to whoever plays the worse from here to when he returns. My pick is Samardzija will get sent down but if Berg does not play a lot, it has a good chance to be him.

I guess we just have to wait and see.

Will Soriano get Benched...

Before todays game manager Lou Pinella was pondering the decision whether to bench starting LF Alfonso Soriano. I think Pinella is thinking about it because he missed a fly ball yesterday that should of been caught and probably lost the Cubs the game. Also he was not hitting. But Pinella inserts him in todays lineup verse the Brewers.

Going into todays game Soriano has hit .143 with 3 hits in 21 at-bats. But in todays game Soriano went 2-3 with 2 singles. So maybe he got the memo to start playing good.

If the Cubs bench him, what would that do to him mentally? I say it might have a little effect but it might also help him too.

After todays game I say he will be back in there on Wednesday but also Nady played good today so who knows.

So now with all the outfielders hitting, how the rotation go in the outfielder now?

We just have to wait and see.

Ted Lilly on Another Set Back...

Yesterday it was announce that P Ted Lilly had another setback due to stiffness in his back. That injury has been pothering him for about a week now. He was suppose to pitch a minor league game on Friday but had the back pain and was then suppose to pitch Sunday and the same issue came up.

Before the season started Ted Lilly return date was set for April 19th but with the 2 latest set-backs. I don't think he will return by then. I say he returns anywhere from from the end or April to early May. I think they will take a easy on him until gets fully healthy because the Cubs will be in contention time he comes back.

The good news is, the set-back has nothing to do with him arm.

I guess we just and to wait and see of how everything goes.

If I was Pinella...

This is what I would do if I was the manager of the Chicago Cubs:

1) I would not take a pitcher out of the inning if he is pitching good because the batter is the opposite of his pitching arm. Unless the batter kills the pitcher. Pinella always does that and I dislike that.

2) Let the pitchers pitch 100 pitches if they are pitching good and not take them out.

3) Play the hotter hand and not the player who is getting paid the most money.

4) Call up Castro and move Therot to 2nd. If Theriot is not hitting, make him platoon with Fontenot.

Fire LOU!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I have not been a Cubs fan to say fire Lou Pinella over the last year or so but now I am getting really pissed at his dumb ass moves he makes during games.

For some reason in the 8th inning of the ball game yesterday he puts John Grabow in the game who is suppose to be the lefty specialist instead of the set-up man Esmalin Caridad who is a better guy to go into that positing. You most likely no already, Grabow gave up a 2-run homer which was the game winner for the Braves and Pinella then put Caridad in for one batter and he struck the batter out.

He does not let Marshall pitch more tham a couple innings when he is the Cubs long reliever. That could of loss them the game on Monday because of not letting Marshall pitch more.

He still is playing Mike Fontenot over Jeff Baker which I think was a mistake. Fontenot make a bid mistake in the field yesterday and can not hit with runners in scoring position.

Kosuke should be the lead off man, Theriot still does not have a hit on the season and that is not good for a leadoff man.

So if Pinella changes this, the Cubs will win lots more games but if he does not he will not be managing pass May. Sandberg new manager.

I guess we just have to wait and see, if he changes stuff up.

Answers from Yesterdays Post...

1) I do not think Kosuke will hit like he did yesterday because he always starts off hitting and then goes into a majore slump.
2) I do think Big Z will be a 15+ game winner in 2010 because he never pitches good on opening besides last year.
3) I think Byrd will be a good pick up because he is good in the clubhouse, good at defence and puts up average numbers with the bat.
4) I think Smardzija will be in the majors until Lilly returns from the DL and then gets sent down.
5) I don't know if Berg was the right decision but maybe yesterday he was nervous and it got to him. But I think Thomas Diamond could of been a better decision.
6) I do expect the Cubs to keep hitting the ball hard for the whole season. If they do that, Cubs will win the division.
7) I am not big on the Cubs pitching but anything has to be better than waht they did on Monday. If the Cubs are still in the race come the trade deadline, expect Jim Hendry to trade for a pitcher.
8) I do not expect Soriano to slump again and put up the same numbers as he did in 2007.
9) Its Lee, there is no way he has lots of errors. I expect aroung 6 or 7 errors this year.
10) YESSSSSSSSSSSSSS they will. They suck and are only there to get paid not to get the call right.

9) Will Lee have a lot of errors this year?
10) Will the umps screw up on another play that goes against the Cubs in the 2010 season?

What I would do after Just 1 Game...

I know it is only 1 game but these have to happen because if they don't it will be a long season. They still can make the playoffs but will make it more sure if they make these moves.

1) Send Jeff Samardzija down or just plain out release him. His trade stock has fallen big time and since he has been a Cub, he has done nothing besides give up runs, walks, walks and more walks. He also can get hit off because he only has 1 pitch and that is a fast ball.

2) Call up top prospect SS Starlin Castro. I know he is probably not ready but I can not stand Ryan Theriot's defence. He is so bad at defence, every time a ball is hit there I never want to watch. He can not throw from short to first, he has no range and routine groundball are not for sure outs. If he does not hit, there is no need for him to play. If Castro got the call, it will improve the defence big time and make the pitchers even better.

Well in this game, the umpires did not help at all. They missed a big play in the outfield where there CF Nate Mcclouth dive for a ball and missed it but the umps call it an out and Ramirez saw the ball hit the ground and stayed at second. But with the umps call it a catch, Ramirez got doubled off. The replay clearly show the ball hitting the ground and the game would of totally have a different outcome. So should there be replays on those calls? I was against that but if this is only the 1st game of the season, I say yes then because this is going to drive me nuts if they keep missing calls like that.

At least in this game, the Cubs bats came alive and were hitting the ball with authority unlike last year where the could not buy a hit. That is why I am looking forward to this season.

I know probably those first 2 steps I would do won't happen but would be nice and should in my opinion.

Trade Scenario: Cubs, M's...em out good,

This is not real and just a trade that could help both teams.

Cubs get: Player To Be Named Later.

M's get: 2B Mike Fontenot.

Reason for trade for the Cubs: Every Cubs fan would like to see 20 year old SS Starlin Castro make the team along with me. If the Cubs trade Mike Fontenot, this can open up a opportunity for him to start. You move Theriot to 2nd where I think he would play way better defence and put up the same numbers as he always does on offence. Then you can insert Castro right in as the starting SS and Baker would be the primarily utility guy.

Reason for trade for M's: Fontenot would be a perfect fit for the utility role. When he was the Cubs utility guy 2 years ago, he was the best at it. He also plays pretty good defence, above average. He would help the M's out good by backing up Figgins and Lopez. Now he can be more attractable because he can play short now.

If the M's are not open to a trade for him. This can work for any team that is in need of a utility guy.

3 Players to Watch for in 2010...

These players will be major league players:

1) SP Carlos Zambrano: Will Big Z be immature this year or be a more calm Big Z? Coming into spring training, he said he will keep his emotions to himself. Zambrano is a big key to the Cubs success in the 2010 season after only winning 9 games in the 2009 season. Zambrano has change his pitches this year and is trying to work with a new method. So he can win more games and strike out more batters. I expect Zambrano to have a bounce back year by winning 18 games and posting a 3.66 era.

2) 3B Aramis Ramirez: Will Ramirez stay healthy during the 2010 campaign or re-injure his shoulder? Since he decided not to get surgery on his shoulder, he is more gullible to injuring it again. If he makes a dive, he has a really good chance to injure the shoulder again. But I expect him to be fine during the 2010 season. The Cubs need his big bat during the season if they want to go back to the playoffs. I say he will hit 29hr, 114 rbi and bat .306 and play 144 games.

3) LF Alfonso Soriano: Will Soriano recover from his knee surgery and produce way better in 2010? I say yes, he kind of has to. He will not bat leadoff all year and will stay in the 6th hole to drive in runs. Like last year, I think he was not hitting because of his knee injury but with his knee being fixed, I hope it will help. I say it will help and he will get back to hitting home runs. I say he will hit 33hr, 99rbi and bat .269 in 127 games.

Thoughts on the 3 key players that need to be big for the Cubs in 2010?

3 Prospects to Keep a eye on...

These are players that Cub fans should watch for in 2010. Players in the minors. I will state when or if he will get called up in the 2010 season.

1) SS Starlin Castro: Every Cubs fan would like for him to come up as soon as possible. Even be in the majors out of spring training. Castro has top of the order speed, a good throwing arm and above average defense. When he does in fact get the call to come to the majors. he will be the Cubs starting SS and leadoff man. They would then move Theriot to 2nd. A move that has to be made and probably is overdue. Prediction: He will be called up before the 2010 trade deadline and will be the Cubs starting SS.

2) 3B Josh Vitters: People say he could be the starting 3B when Ramirez leaves after next season (I do not see him opting out after this season.) Or he could be move to 1B when Lee leaves, if he does sign an extension after 2010 season. Vitters is not the best contact hitter but does have power for a middle of the order bat. He plays average defense and a little bit above average speed. I say when he does get called up, he will be there 3B and bat anywhere from 3-6 in the lineup. Prediction: I say he will get the call to come up in 2011, not his year. He could be a September call-up this year or even maybe if someone gets injured. But would have to be playing good in the minors.

3) P Andrew Cashner: People do not know what he should be, a closer or a starter but all people do know he will be in the majors with the Cubs at some point in his career. As of right now, I do not think Cashner is going to be a ace. He has some command issues, well at least in spring training he did. I think he could be a good number 2 pitcher. He has a good fastball with OK second pitches. Prediction: He will be a 2010 September call-up.

Honorable Mentions: OF Brett Jackson, P Jay Jackson, OF James Adducii, and SS Hak-Ju Lee.

Those are some names to watch for down the road.

Bold Predictions for the 2010 Season...

Cubs Release Kevin Millar...

The Cubs have finalized there 25 man roster today by adding Chad Tracy to there 40 man roster and releasing Kevin Millar. Tracy earned the Cubs final bench spot. The Cubs also optioned OF Sam Fuld and 1B Micah Hoffpauir to Triple A Iowa.

I am kind of surprise that Tracy made the team over Millar because of all the previously reports that Millar is likely to make the team because of how he is in the clubhouse.

GM Jim Hendry called this a "tough decision". But they went with Tracy because it is a left-handed bat off the bench and has more versatility because he can play 3B, where he will backup Ramirez.

At the end of the day, this had to be the move they make because Tracy has more upside than Millar.

The Cubs released Millar instead of sending him down to Triple A because they want him to play elsewhere next year. I think he will be signed within 2 weeks.

Andres Blanco to Texas...

According to multiple reports, the Cubs have trade IF Andres Blanco to the Texas Rangers for a player to be named later or cash considerations.

Blanco who was most likely not going to make the team, was out of options and was likely to be claimed by a team. That is where the Cubs would get nothing in return so if you think about it, they had to make this trade. Now that Mike Fontenot can play shortstop, he will will now be the primarily backup shortstop until Starlin Castro gets the call to play in the majors.

Like I just said above, this move is another way for the Cubs to get ready for Castro to get the call.

Do I like this move? I love Blanco's defence but he would struggle at the plate. He was a good defensive replacement but the Cubs don't have room for that on there 25-man roster. So I do like the move because they would of lost him to waivers and they got something in return for him.

Side Note: The Cubs also outrighed Mike Parisi to Triple A Iowa. He was a Rule V Draft pick and since he did not make the Cubs opening day roster he would be sent back to St. Louis. Since he was outrighted before, he was eligible to become a minor free agent. He became a free agent and he chosed to stick with the Cubs organization.

Game #26 of 35. Cubs lost to the A's 5-2. Record 12-9-2.

Players who stood out:
3B Aramis Ramirez went 3-3 with 2 1B.
CF Marlon Byrd went 1-3 with a HR, rbi and a run.

Players who stood out but thw wrong way:
SS Ryan Theriot went 0-4.
P Carlos Marmol got a blown save while allowing 3 hits and 3 earned runs.

Before todays game Pinella answer the pitching questions and noq the only place the Cubs have to figure out is the bench. Pinella said Carlos Silva and Tom Gorzelanny will start the season in the roation while Sean Marshall and Jeff Samardzija will start the season in the bullpen. Also James Russell earn the last spot in the bullpen.

The Cubs also made more cuts. The Cubs optioned James Adduci, Jeff Gray, John Gaub and Marcos Mateo to Triple A Iowa. And Darwin Barney, Robinson Chirinos and Bobby Scales were optioned to minor league camp.

Tomorrow the Cubs will play the Padres at 3:05 and the game will be televise on WGN.

( The 4th and 5th starters can be switch.)

RP-Jeff Gray (taking gamble when he has not even pitch)
