First to get started, the Cubs tendered contracts to RP Carlos Marmol, RP Angel Guzman, P Sean Marshall, P Tom Gorzelanny, SS Ryan Theriot, 2B Jeff Baker, 2B Mike Fontenot and C Koyie Hill. But did not tender a contract to RP Neal Cotts, so Cotts becomes a free agent. Bruce Miles said the Cubs hope they can resign Neal Cotts to a minor league deal. I wish the Cubs did not tender a contract to Fontenot but maybe they will trade him, only time will tell.
The Cubs reportedly are interested in OF Johnny Gomes of the Reds, IF Afredo Amezaga of the Marlins and OF Ryan Church of the Braves. All 3 of theses players became free agents yesterday.
Names that I think the Cubs will or should have interest in are:
RP Matt Capps: The Cubs would like a veteran bullpen pitcher that will come cheap and Capps will go under that.
2B Kelly Johnson: The Cubs need a 2B that will come cheaper and Johnson does not put up bad stats. I would love to have him.
SP Chien-Ming Wang: The Cubs need a 5th starter and Wang won a lot of games 2 years ago before undergoing surgery on his arm.
IF Garrett Atkins: Atkins does have power but put up bad stats last year, who knows maybe he can play 2B, hoping.
I like all theses names and will sign any of them to a reasonable price.
